Has the description of the S.P.A.M. forum changed?

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Sites with Points and Alternative Miles, including referral bonuses, congas, and any of the other loyalty currencies</font>
Above is the description of the S.P.A.M. forum. There have been several posts there over the last few weeks, however, that do not fit this description in any way, yet they are never moved or closed. Whenever I or anyone else brings up this fact in the these threads, we are made out to be the bad guy by some people for being so "negative." Any thoughts?

No change that I can see, except perhaps that the old congas have seemingly died down quite a bit! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Also, the Forum moderator has already respond to this very same question:

Here are my rules of thumb:

1. If it's going to get you miles/points to your favorite program in alternative ways, S.P.A.M.

2. If it involves announcing or looking for a service/product for free or at an excellent price, S.P.A.M.

3. If it involves the discussion of anything else, not related to any of the topics of the other forums, then OMNI

But then again, what do I know http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

However, I was asking Randy this question, not you...

well, hmmmm, ...

so far I too did often reply-to/answer questions that were initially intended to be answered by others (I/'we' even gave and still sometimes give answers to questions that were not raised yet ...) - and I don't believe that anything is wrong about that? Even more so, if it seems, as you say yourselve, that you missed the inital answer given by a (appointed by Randy) moderator.

I think the definiton posted by Jfe is pretty clear and benefits virtually every FT'er who visits the SPAM forum.

I would like to commend Moderator Jfe, he is doing an excellent job.

From reading the posts on the forum, it is very clear that 99% of FT'ers there are very happy with the way the forum is run and find the info there to be extremely useful.

John and Rudi, I think Morrissey is asking the question to Randy because it seems like the moderators have decided to allow off-topic posts to their forum themselves. While I respect and understand that decision it's obvious that Morrissey would like an answer from Randy on the matter who has the ability to determine whether the change is validated and perform the edit of the forum description that currently doesn't match the content of that board.

jfe already pointed out that he's discussing the changes with his fellow moderators.

Oh, kindly forgive me, PLEASE! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redface.gif

Some folks, naturally barring you, of course, may well think, or at least have previously thought, that a posting by someone to a BB might be open to follow up posts from other readers! Silly eh? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Folks who were here from the beginning, however, can easily attest to the fact that "S.P.A.M." has always contained many posts about saving money, freebies, and sales, and such, and in fact it was actually the massive proliferation of conga posts dealing with such things as "ALLAdvantage" that eventually lead Randy to accede and to actually begin a separate "S.P.A.M." forum! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks, doc -- I had no idea that the forum title idea came (more or less) from NJDavid. Ya learn something new every day! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum73/HTML/000089.html

Thanks for that informative link doc. I don't see anything there in that thread which mentions saving money, freebies, and sales, however. For example:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">I noticed that there are quite a few posts about Mypoints in "The Buzz." I know mypoints.com offers frequent flyer miles while others such as freeride.com do not (and others like webbonusmiles.com claim they will). Since I suspect that readers of this board like miles & points of all kinds, maybe a forum titled "Miles & Points on the Net." I hope that's not too off-topic. It seems like discussions of mypoints, freeride, alladvantage, etc. could be posted there.</font>

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A miles and points section would work very nicely and keep all these little offers for those interested.. and those who don't have the time to click on a zillion Web sites.</font>

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">How about "Non-Travel Mileage building Programs?"
(with the caption: information on point builder programs like ClickRewards and Mypoints)</font>

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">I'm glad to see that there is support for this! With the proliferation of different internet points programs and "pyramid" programs like AllAdvantage, etc., this is more relevant now than it was in August 1999.</font>
And from Randy:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">I hope you all know how much we value the input. This is one of those seemingly rare occasions where a variety of you all agree on one thing. I can do this and will take just a few days to properly think of the title and description for such a forum. I have noticed all the attention that MyPoints and ClickRewards get and it is pretty distracting to the other forums because of the vast amount of offers that just MyPoints sends out.</font>
All I am asking here is if the description of the forum has changed, and if so, could the change please be reflected. Surely we can all agree that posting in the correct forum is important, no?

(Furthermore, could you please refrain from your condescending "Folks who were here from the beginning" comments in the future? Just because I registered with FT in 2001 doesn't mean that's when I first started visiting this site. I first discovered FT back in 1999, but I lurked for several years because I wasn't doing any flying at that time, and felt I had nothing to contribute to the discussions here...)

Condescending????????????

It seemed to me doc was simply pointing out to those reading this thread HOW the Forum originated. I thank him for that, as I did not realise it. Neither did some others here it seems who did not deem the useful link or comment "condescending".

FWIW I found jfe's outline very concise and instructive about what is and what is not applicable in the Forum. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif

I smiled to look at S.P.A.M. even today and notice 5 of the threads on page 1 are relating to MyPoints.

So the forum does seem to be admirably fulfulling its original purpose Randy created it for all those years ago?

It's so nice to see you smiling! Is it your view that as long as a certain percentage of threads are on-topic, that is somehow fulfilling the original purpose of the forum? You'd be the first one to scream bloody murder if I posted an item about AA in the UA forum...

If you posted an AA thread in the UA forum I doubt anyone would have a chance for any response before one of the FOUR vigilant moderators closed it and/or moved it to where you *should* have located it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

IIRC that is exactly WHY Randy appointed all the moderators?

Seems the S.P.A.M. Moderators are likewise happy with the pertinent content there.

CameraGuy Jul 29, 2003 6:53 pm

It is NOT up to the Moderators to decide the guidelines for what content stays or goes. It is up to RANDY.

Until Randy changes the description for S.P.A.M., the Non-Miles related posts should be closed.
