Randy,

I understand your position, but have one "problem".

In my opinion, opening OMNI up to a "select" few members is a BAD idea. All members of FT should be treated as equally as possible.

Just as I disagree with the "Advisory Board" and it's very secret nature, I disagree with the idea of a group of people who are "better suited" to return to OMNI.

OMNI was a fun forum although I must admit I did more reading than posting

You disagree with it yet you are running for it?

Randy can ask whomever he wants for advice, and listen to whomever he chooses from among those offering advice.

The TalkBoard is one method of receiving advice. Hopefully the members of the TB will offer content that Randy finds useful.

HUH?? Gary, my answer was in reference to the question from Techgirl, I was merely pointing out that Cameraguy is running for the talkboard and that is not the same as the advisory board...

As ScottC has already pointed out, I am referring to the Advisory Board (Whatever that is). NOT the TalkBoard.

I respect the opinion of RP but hope that OMNI does come back sometime in the future. If not, sadly I know I will drift away from FT altogether as that is what kept me coming back for more.

Scott, my post was not a criticism of you! (Sorry if it seemed otherwise?)

It seemed as though CameraGuy was criticizing the idea of the Advisory Board (which, as you point out, is different than the TalkBoard). And I was just saying that Randy can take advice from and listen to whomever he chooses.

Sorry if it seemed as though my comment was directed at you (it wasn't).

Cheers,
Gary

Okay, Randy. Whatever. It seems rash and a bit of overkill, IMO, to cave in to those who wish to pull the plug on OMNI just because they can't always get their way.

To me, FT is 1. travel/miles talk; and 2. OMNI, and the issues (whatever those issues pertain to) are the most important thing, above and beyond us as individuals - anonplz, docsucksbigtime (or whatever), etc. People come and go, squabbles play out, but "at the end of the day" there are still issues to discuss, and if you can't discuss them here amongst a friendly, intelligent group, there are indeed other places to do it. I enjoyed doing it here, because not only do I enjoy discussing issues which are important to me with other intelligent people, but also because, believe it or not, I love traveling, and like keeping that hobby close to my surf-habits. I also feel kind of like I've gotten to actually know people who participate here, even though I've never, ever met any FTer in the flesh (to my knowledge).

Anyway, it would be great if you decided to bring it back! I like the idea about giving more time-out power to moderators, so that even if they don't make money doing it, the power they get from doing it can be compensation itself.

Gary,

I was not critisizing the idea of an Advisory Board, just the secret nature of it.

Who is on this advisory board?
What is their agenda?
Do they speak for all FT'ers, or just a clique?

IMHO, Randy should do everything possible to discourage cliques. Allowing "select" people to post in a secret "Advisory Board" forum, or OMNI is a bad idea.

I like the idea suggested by doppy. As a variant or addition, several times FTers have suggested limiting each user's daily OMNI post count: maybe 10 posts a day (we would use them more wisely).

How about also ruling out of order on OMNI the meta-posting (e.g., posting 8 or 10 new topics simply to make a point about someone else's topic) and encouraging the OMNI moderators to not just lock them but to delete them?

Folks that Randy has invited.

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">What is their agenda?</font>
To offer advice to Randy

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Do they speak for all FT'ers, or just a clique?</font>
I would hypothesize that they speak for themselves and what they believe to be best for FT, and they weigh in on issues when Randy asks them to or when they have something to say that they think would be of use to Randy.

FWIW, I am not on the Advisory Board. But it seems to me that using a forum for a group of informal advisors seems to be a technical convenience, rather than forcing everyone to have ongoing discussions by email.

I guess it could be accomplished MORE secretly (use a different URL) in order to not be so obtrusive...

Randy has chosen to ask a closely held group for input. That's certainly his right! And for technical convenience, he's created a forum for that group's discussion.

I'm not sure where I would even have the grounds to complain about such a thing? Seems eminently within Randy's purview...

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Allowing "select" people to post in a secret "Advisory Board" forum, or OMNI is a bad idea.</font>
And moderators have their own forum. Only moderators get to post there.

TalkBoard members have their own forum. Only Talkboard members get to post there.

The good news: there are nearly 2 million posts that all FTers have access to.

I have no problem whatsoever with Randy asking for or inviting advise.

My problem is with the secretive/clique nature.

Just as I have a problem with allowing "Select" members to have access to OMNI.

It invites cliques. And lord knows FT already has enough of those.
