Please don't post on OMNI

Randy has gone out of his way to leave OMNI available in view-only state, and some technicality of that means that we are able to post new topics, even though we can't reply.

Surely our host's message that "OMNI is closed to posting" means that he didn't intend for us to take advantage of him and still post our discussions, albeit one post per thread.

It was one thing for the occasional poster to accidentally stumble upon this, but now we have posters actually trying to carry on conversations, explicitly posting replies when they know full well that it is Randy's intention that OMNI be dark for now.

See the topic Responses to some of the OMNI topics as a particularly egregious example, as she's responding to three different "threads" knowing full well that posting isn't permitted right now.

Randy and the TalkBoard are currently deciding how much they can trust the people on OMNI with, and this betrays the small amount of trust we have left.

Perhaps the mods should delete all posts made after the closure, and keep deleting new ones, but it's sad we should need babysitters now, of all times.

Robb,

With all due respect, how are we supposed to know that we shouldn't be posting when Omni is available as well as the "post new topic" option is up there?

For all we know, Randy reconsidered and there is a small glitch in getting it back up & fully functional.

Maybe a clearer annoucement is in order.

Perhaps the announcement on top that says:

OMNI will be closed to posting until August 26

isn't enough???? Besides that, some of the people posting there now were contributing to threads about Omni's closure so it's highly unlikely they didn't know about it...

Randy said OMNI was closed.

Rudi asked if it could be Read-Only.

Randy said "Done."

A glitch leads to the ability to post but not reply.

What possesses people to post when Randy clearly closed it?

Mary's right - it's not clear. I don't blame anyone for posting. Either close it down entirely or not, or maybe post a supplemental message, but it's unrealistic to expect OMNI junkies to refrain from taking advantage of something like that, especially when it really isn't costing Randy anything.

Perhaps this topic should be closed and moved to OMNI.

Randy made a clear announcement taht it was closed to posting. Even if he had reconsidered, it would be far more respectful to wait for the announcement of the reconsideration than to assume that he reconsidered and force him to keep correcting that impression.

When your mom sent you to your room, did you also think it was okay to climb out the window and go play since the window was there and working? Stupid mom didn't tell me I can't climb out the window, so it's her fault.

I think it's insulting to Randy to say "You had better make it clear and keep making it clear or we're going to do whatever we want until you've communicated it some way that we find acceptable." And now is no time for OMNI regs to insult Randy.

Besides, who are you gonna believe--Randy or some software program?

well, it looks like the glitch has been fixed, and posting on Omni is limited now.

Sorry Guys, to me it wasn't clear. Yes, I saw Randy's note, but I also saw Omni back up with the ability to post. I assumed that it was in the process of being brought back up.

No offense to Randy indended - I wasn't trying to climb out the window . Computer glitches occur all them time. I, and I'm sure others, assumed that this was one of those cases.

And, no, I don't expect Randy to post a note that says you can post again. He has better things to do with his time.

It just WASN'T all that clear.

Maybe you should post something IN OMNI saying please don't post here, unless, of course, the glitch has been fixed.

As did I. I was elated actually as I never knew how much I really enjoyed Omni. I could post, I thought perhaps something with the Talkboard had been decided upon, and it was just a matter of time before everything was back up. This was what I thought. This was certainly not malicious. It was just unclear.

Think, people. Think...

A series of new threads, with no answers.
New threads just to answer other threads?

How is this remotely logical?

As I began to suspect, the 'strange' form of OMNI was due to the intent to honor the request made
by an FTer to make OMNI available as read-only. Only it didn't work out quite that way...

Yes, I expressed the view that OMNI should be shut down completely, or brought back fully.
At the time, I did not suspect the read-only intent. But even then, I knew not to post.

I can't blame people for not thinking a certain way (we are not perfect), but I would suggest
instead that there has been a lack of respect and plain ordinary common sense.

FT has figuratively bent over backwards to accomodate us, and we should have some respect.

But I guess this proves how popular OMNI really is...

To all. You are absolutely correct - it wasn't clear enough. Actually, your posts here (thanks robb) helped me click that extra button i had forgot about. Truth is, i was sort of enjoying OMNI with the post only state, that way far more control. In fact, imagine OMNI in a post-only state with a time clock preventing you from posting more than once an hour (that way you wouldn't be able to logically post a reply to someone elses post back-to-back because by the time the one-hour limit was up, it would be far down the thread line). By golly, I think I might have something here. Just kidding about that, but not kidding when saying thanks to all of you for being good sports about this.

For what it's worth, even former TB members have chimed in with their suggestions which I am going over. Say what you will about this group of members, but they are absolutely commited to a great FT, whether on the board or not. And here's another side to this issue - our moderators continue to work hard at suggesting their own solutions. They want OMNI to continue as well. Imagine that, the volunteer work they do and they want to continue with it. That is a wonderful statement.
