Deleting posts

It seems to me that the choice is to let the entire thread continue, or else lock it and close it out.

I have seen threads where useful discussion was going on, and then there's an "azzhole" insertion, maybe a personal attack which could cause the thread to be locked.

Is there some way for a moderator to delete individual posts? I realize this is close to censorship, and may in fact be that, but it seems any thread is vulnerable to some doofus pissing in the soup.

Actually, BigLar, there are times on FT when individual posts are deleted and the thread is allowed to continue. It is often done so seamlessly that uninvolved parties don't even know what happened. That is certainly my preference when it comes to moderation and I have seen a couple of occasions where Randy, himself, has very skillfully moderated in this fashion.

Selecting individual posts to delete does, however, require more skill than simply shutting down an entire thread and I think that that is the reason that shutting down threads occurs more often.

A recent forum on the AC board had about the first 5 posts deleted and the conversation continued. The topic was so nebulous no-one noticed unless you were one of the first into the topic. Only by looking at the post count, can you figure out which one it was.

This is preferable to me than locking the whole thread - just eliminate the sh!tdisturbers.
