How about electing moderators?
Just an idea. that way people could decide whtehr they wanted aggressive, zealous moderation or the lighter touch favoured by others.
To me if appears as if some of the new moderators have taken there role to be one of pouring over posts to find a reason to close them down.
Would be interesting to see if that is what the people want.
As I said, just a thought.
Stephen

As in any situation, it's all in the eye of the beholder. I, for one, haven't forgotten that moderators aren't an outside force, they are from within and perhaps what you see is exactly what the majority wants from moderation. I'd say the majority (silent or not) are quite pleased with the moderators. If not, then I find it hard to believe with hundereds of thousands of visitors a month on FlyerTalk that factually only a handful seem to have anything negative to say abuot moderators. And most if they even thought about it would even give in that once you deduct the period it takes for any moderator to get familar with their roles have really done an outstanding job.
As for voting for moderators - it's all about volunteering for a better FlyerTalk, not a competition of sorts. Your comments are certainly something for us to think about but there's really been a lack of complaints about moderators in the last month or two. My only comment is that those that do complain never seem to assign any blame to those that posted information proven to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and that ultimately require moderating.

Well then, here's one:
Would someone please delete all the stupid, bandwidth-wasting preference threads on OMNI so it can become interesting again? Who has time to pore through all that chaff to find the few threads that have any actual substance?

If I have to live with all the anti-war nonsense and political debating, I think that a little bit of fun is in order.
Look at it this way... both types of posts seem to get a lot of response, so obviously there is SOME interest in both on the part of the greater FT community.

"A little bit of fun" is fine, even desirable. Anything can be taken to excess, and the threads I mentioned have now hijacked OMNI entirely to the point where there is practically nothing else. It's really not much different from a very slow denial of service attack.

I also am disappointed with OMNI lately. I feel excluded -- there are just too many threads that are based on, or are hijacked by, inside jokes, such as those about the COE, particular FT members, etc. I'm just not up to speed on all that, and thus view all those posts as needless clutter. Perhaps the OMNI moderators should move "inside joke" threads and threads about FT members to FT Community.

Hmmm just make it easy on yourself and be like me ... I never read OMNI...
As far as overzealous moderators, I know in the forum I help with, we hardly close threads, unless necessary... I personally will never edit any poster's comments. If it is bad, I'll relay it to Randy and maybe they'll get a time out. I may close a thread that gets off topic as well. I'm one to let the "free thinking" go. I see my "job" as not being here to censor, just keep things on topic.

Please don't wish such threads on "Community". The moderators THERE drop-kick most of their closed ones across to OMNI as it is.

(1) The moderators, or any select group of people for that matter, recognize and understand all such "inside jokes", and
(2) such "inside jokes" cannot be found elsewhere on FT.
