Solving the Multiple-Submit Problem

Sometimes nothing visible happens when you press the "Submit New Topic" or "Submit Reply" button. This causes folks to press it several times, which causes multiple copies of their messages to be posted.

The simplest fix might be to place text similar to this near the buttons, "Press Only Once, Processing May Take a Few Moments."

Those multiple posts are annoying, arent they?

I suggested to Flyertalk that they implement a check that does not allow the same person to have two posts in a row... but no reaction.

I hate to imagine how much space on the servers is being wasted due to multiple posts.

Not to offend, but FlyerTalk Suggestions is the appropriate board for this.

The multi-submit problem isn't something we can fix. Supposedly it's a fix in the new code for this board and we'll only have to hope it will work. It may not be in what we currently have tweeked, but i'll ask where it is. If it was a matter of just clicking a button to add the feature, it would have been done a long time ago. Actually, it was a feature on a new board we looked at, but the new board had lower overall board performance so we didn't go with it. But it is on the table because i'm sure we all don't like dupes on board. Thanks for the update from the members perspective.

How about the ability for users to delete their own posts? People who go back to the thread in which they have just posted will see duplicates and would take action themselves to remove them if they were permitted.

Moderators could remove dupe posts too, no?

Actually, you can fix this to a fair degree. UBB's 'flood control' or 'flood check' (can't remember the exact name of the setting) is one of the miscellaneous settings options. I'm not certain about InfoPop v.5.47, but in 5.5 you can set the time span on flood control in seconds ... in the office we have ours set at 10 seconds. REALLY keeps the dupes in check.

Wow, this looks like some **factual data** that might help with the problem. Would like to know from Randy and/or his tech team if this worked, or if they tried it.

Well, I noted this morning that the "floodgates" were recently reset from 15s to 60s!

FWIW, if you set them at 12 hours, you could possibly not only eliminate double posts but also help to eradicate the "abuser" problem caused by those unnamed FT'ers who are inclined to post more than once or twice each day!

i have done multiple posts, being a newbie or fng [friendly new guy] as they said in nam. first problem was not letting the system do it's own thing & coming back later. 2nd was hitting back button & then hitting forward button to get to bottom of page to go to forum rather than go back button 3 or 4 times. we all learn thru doing!

What about those that copy the original post and then give their comments. How many times do the orignal post need to be copied by OTHERS (like, maybe zero)

Yes, thanks to the fine suggestion and support of 'essxjay' we have now implemented Flood Gate which should help with the dupe posts. As doc noticed, we did change from 15s to 60s after testing a few different times on some other boards we're toying with. The shorter times did not prevent server or user dupes too much, but we have found that 60s works just about right since one is likely to take more than a minute to read another post and respond to it. Again, it was the suggestion of essxjay who has lead to almost eliminating this annoying habit of the web. Dupes be gone. But it doesn't solve every instance. I cleaned up a thread in the last two days where a member had posted the same message 7 times and they were minutes apart. Anyway, let us know is you think it's working.
