Ozland Napalm

Ozstamps, I think I know who you are and I know I know what you are but what I do not know is why you are. Why did you come into this reasonably happy community about two months ago, innundate it with an average of more than 1 message PER HOUR every day, and then lay down a napalm cover to burn it up.

Mind you I am just asking a question, not insulting you and trying to get into the ring with you. I just don't understand why and I think there are many others who have the same question.

Would it be asking too much for you to tell me and us just what your purpose is? If you want to be known as El Supremo or Poster Grande, I, have no problem with that.

I have told others, like my friend Catman, that his land has been invaded, is now occupied, and that he and everyone else should probably accept that, at least for the time being, but some enlightenment from you certainly would be valuable. Just what causes someone to wreak havoc on a happy land? Tell us, Oz, because the residents of this once happy land are both hurt and

mystified. After all is said and done, let me, speaking for myself alone, wish you God's peace where ever you are and in what ever you do, now and forever.

Somewhat in defense (though it's not my place)...

I have enjoyed many of ozstamps' posts. My only pseudo-problem stems from his tendency to provoke and to read into and respond vehemently to any <perceived> provocation. (I'm not sure if this will qualify.) Also in defense, I would offer that, IMO, he is not alone in this tendency.

While I am not especially hurt, I am somewhat mystified by the aforementioned tendencies (plural) and increasingly depressed by their snowball effects.

Snowballs in September?

Regardless, I somehow manage to have enjoyable life off the board, and a pretty much enjoyable time on the board. It's the weekend here, and is time to relax !

Well Nathan Detroit . we are told elsewhere your name is not Nathan and you are not from Detroit. Not that I care one jot, but of all people it is curious you take the utter cheek to ask anyone else here WHO they are, or why they are here.

I spend a GREAT deal more time on these boards than pretty well anyone else is one obvious answer. If I am logged on 20 or 50 times more than others it follows I will post more. This is my choice, and is NONE of your affair. Rudi and Doc have 8000-9000 posts each as I recall and are both very active so your comment is foolish.

Others with presumably wiser heads than yours are this morning urging posters on other boards to stick to TRAVEL related postings, not flames, or personal attacks, and they are succeeding, and yet you lob in with this one, despite that clear lead.

Why you have the sheer impertinence to post here bothers me. You might have taken the advice many feely give to ME and emailed this impertinent question in the first instance IMHO. I may have answered, I may not have, but THAT is surely the correct approach in the first instance.

This thread is WAY out of line IMHO unless you have altered your name by deed poll to Randy Petersen.

I had dinner last night in Sydney with Randy Petersen. For about 5 hours we had a nice evening on the town. A lovely guy. I asked him if he had ANY problem with my number of posts, or contents of my posts etc, and HE had none. He laughed it off and we had another beer. Randy had NO problem with them, and had every opportunity to raise anything he wished. Randy is a pretty easy going guy, but runs a VERY successful business, very well, and would I am sure have made a valid point if there were one to make. Randy similarly laughed it off I am advised when an FTer in Asia touched on this general matter a night or so earlier.

When YOU run your own board sir, you get to start these threads I guess. And ONLY then. I politely point out to you this is the Randy Petersen forum, not the Nathan Detroit one.

I posted something simple a few days ago:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/003354.html

That has received 63 replies in a few days, and therefore probably 200-300 have signed up, as most do not acknowledge these promos on board, and many of those got a totally free Hilton Hotel night from it! For a few minutes work. I suspect Randy recognizes those kind of posts create lots of happy visitors to HIS site. You mention in your post this is someone else's "land", and you are wrong I submit.

Look at the names on that thread -- HEAPS of people you normally never see. They are often non elite flyers. They just cruise these boards looking for something useful for FREE for their future travels. And they appreciate it. They often say 'Thank You'. It gives them something nice in their day. It gives them a reason to visit Randy's boards. YOUR post does not.

The only negative poster recently on that Hilton thread has been one of the 'old boys club' just popped up trying to derail it off on a totally irrelevant tangent. WHY? Who knows. Some of the EXACT things IMHO that we should be promoting on these boards, like that Hilton 3000 points promo when they are rolling well, get deliberately derailed by regulars like that. Perhaps direct your question to him. Why is HE here?

I have done a search on Nathan Detroit and cannot see one post of YOURS recently that has assisted anyone with travel plans or mileage building. Maybe I missed something? Or maybe you just feel so superior that initiating this kind of thread appeals to you more?

If that is the case, my pity is truly with you.

The wiser heads on this board may wish to add their comments to your impertinent thread, in the hope it is the last such one raised.

Maybe this is the time to set a few standards around here?

And persons posting hereon using their REAL handles would be appreciated. The spate of fake user names without no email contact supplied is also a very distasteful development for obvious reasons, and MANY have concurred with me on that by email etc.

Dear Mr. Detroit:

If your thread is not an insult, I don't know one when I see one!

While I have found some of ozstamps posting informative and interesting it is certainly true that some of his others should never have been typed IMO.

BUT, I do recognize this is a public board owned by none of us and therefore understand that people cannot be forced to go away.

I wish ozstamps stuck to 'good' posts as for me his time here is so far a wash with me. If he stuck to good posts he would in my eyes be one of the top contributors.

Dorian

p.s. ozstamps, these are my opinions and are not meant to be construed as 'war' material

Doc .. thank you for remembering that "Apology" thread posted here only weeks back by the same Nathan Detroit, which started off in part:

"I believe an apology board will be useful for a few weeks, to enable some of us who have sinned to openly confess, ask for forgiveness, and repent. I, for one, will lead the way ...... It will not happen again. If I have anything to say, it will be be absolutely impersonal".
"Nathan", if this new thread is impersonal, please do not include me next time you wish to be personal. Perhaps you may be reminded of many things if you go back and read your OWN thread and repentances?

Just my two cents, but just cause Nathan Detroit is not from Detroit and is not named Nathan, is irrelevant. Oz, ND explained the name to me in an email, it is a chararcter from American fiction that he enjoys. Let the name calling about names stop. By everyone.

I have a strong suspicion that ozstamps doesn't weigh only one ounce, NOR is he from Stamford, CT, NOR does he attend public school!

Will the hypocrisy never end?

A quick search at ask.com reveals ...

Based on Damon Runyon's short story "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown," Guys and Dolls revolves around Nathan Detroit, the organizer of the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York, who bets fellow gambler Sky Masterson that he can't make the next girl he sees fall in love with him. The next girl he sees happens to be Miss Sarah Brown, a pure-at-heart Salvation Army-type reformer, and the stage is set for an hilarious evening of complications.
Hope this provides a little insight into Nate's handle.

Contrary to the subtext of this statement ...

Others with presumably wiser heads than yours are this morning urging posters on other boards to stick to TRAVEL related postings, not flames, or personal attacks, and they are succeeding, and yet you lob in with this one, despite that clear lead.

... N.D. posted here in all seriousness, Oz. He even prefaced his intentions about his query, clearly stating ...

If you wouldn't mind, Oz, I'd like to know as well: Just what is your purpose here?

Contradicting yourself in the same post ...

I politely point out to you this is the Randy Petersen forum...
... but then asserting ...

Maybe this is the time to set a few standards around here?
Uh uh uhhh. You can't have it both ways, kiddo. No appealling to authority (Randy's) on the one hand and then suggesting someone implement policy on the other when it suits you.

In your defense, Ozstamps, you most certainly have contributed in very positive ways on some threads. For example, the background on Altbier was very informative as was the Hilton thread your refer to above. I'm also mystified why anyone had a problem with that thread. It was new info for a lot of folks.

Sadly, I doubt you'll engage me in any kind of real discussion about the other points I've brought up. It's been great bantering with you about mileage runs, typograpical etymology, beer, etc., so why do you avoid my posts that point out you're logical fallacies or contradictions? I thought you'd be the first to engage in a friendly battle of wits, seeing as though you launch so many salvos yourself. I guess ad hominem attacks is the best you can do. What a shame.

I sometimes find Ozstamps posts annoying (others useful, and others good). I however find this type of thread and pedantic drivel to be twice as annoying!

I was going to post an open letter to OZ today...This thread beat me to it. OZ, I am forced to suffer your thousands of posts from you on the boards... STAY OUT OF MY E-MAIL! I recieved 3 URGENT e-mails from you on your trip report from the dinner you are so proud of last night. First, You sent this to several people (you said) that have E-mailed you in the past. I HAVE NEVER E-MAILED, NOR WOULD I E-MAIL YOU. You attack people for being cowards and not posting their e-mail adresses...yet you spam them when they do. I find this to be unnacceptable behavior regardless of the quality of the info. Second, URGENT? Why is a report of a past activity URGENT? Third, I have eaten dinner with Randy also... BUT, I didn't crow and gloat in every forum about it. I never mentioned it until now. WHOOPIE you must be so special. I'm willing to bet many of us have eaten with Randy and not spewed it every where. Fourth, You do act like a idoit when confronted. Fifth, I actually AGREE with you that Some of your posts (i.e. Hilton) are useful. The problem is they represent a percentage of the whole. Sixth, A possible solution (other than you leaving) might be: since you post 30 times a day, Take you top five ideas (or even 10, i'll be generous) and post them. Throw the remainder away. This would present you good ideas and limit the bad. That way instead of being a jerk, you could be a guru. I'm sure that based on your past behvior your response will be ...well let's say interesting.
P.S I don't care if you are gay or not. And thanks for sharing that your "105% sure Randy isn't either". Feeling a little homophobic today?

Oz, you are right: I broke my own self imposed rule by writing something clearly personal. My patience ran out as has my
interest in these boards. Kindly note that my reference(s) were to THE COMMUNITY, meaning by that just that: fellowship (seeOxford). Everyone is welcome but some behave in such a way as to set themselves outside the community and I will leave it to others to comment if they choose to do so, mine having been said earlier.

what else would you like to know?
Oh, by the way, your well written message
provides all the answers to my questions.

So, Ozzy, God's peace and blessing upon you, now and forever. And good bye.

Without throwing too too much more oil on the fire, it is poor netiquitte to add folks to email lists just because they have sent you an e-mail in the past.

I'm glad you got to eat with Randy. Post away about it in the trip reports forum. E-mail it to folks who ask you for unsolicited e-mails. But please don't spam! That's just rude.

BTW, Am I in the 'old boys club?' If so, I've yet to receive the patch jacket and keys to the cigar locker...
