Amy possibility of closing this one, Randy?

Comments are beginning to get nasty and personal in this thread and no new value add posts seem to be happenning.

Any chance you can close this thread? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum20/HTML/001950.html

Thanks.

DOH! Title should be "Any chance" not "Amy chance."

I agree. If I may make a comment here (and Randy, I hope you do see these). . .I really enjoy this board. It's helpful and it's definitely what a net community should be about - sharing information. However, it seems as of late that there are so many "attacks" and nasty emails being sent. I'm not a sensitive person as far as hearing things. I do believe that everybody has the right to say what they want/feel, but it seems that some postings are really getting out of hand. Is it just because people are not face-to-face that they feel as though they can say/do whatever they want? Is it because they can't get upgraded that they're cranky? :-) I don't know, but it does seem as though the level of civility is dropping rather quickly on many of the posts. Is there some way that you can send a message or moderate some of these more closely? The only way a community will grow is if new people are welcomed to join, not chastised when they post. This is just my 0.02 cents. Thanks - I feel better!

Dgolds .. I think Cigarman summed it up pretty well, altho some of the language used by others was quite out of line. It rates about 3 out of 10 surely, and has died down now and can't imagine why it should be closed down? ( And how dare they have a flame war and not invite ozstamps? )

More disappointing to me at least is the claim one regular there has advised newbies 41 times to "search" in his reply posts. (And dgolds I hasten to point out, made a very friendly, helpful first post.)

The CO Forum has far more of a "Repel All Boarders" mentality than any other on FT by my observation (blame it on the Tri Color Pasta!) but phew, the stated use 41 times of the word "search" in his responses by one regular (if the number is correct) is pretty hard on the newcomers if it is not used in conjunction with some advice or a relevant thread being posted.

I do not believe in 5000+ posts I have even once simply answered "search" or anything so abrupt. Nor should any of us really. Gently steering a newer user to "search" and explaining some of its features seems to do the trick, and they ask less the well worn "FAQ" then. (Mostly!)

I think the thread ought to be closed because at this point we have two participants, neither of whom has an e-mail address in their profile, doing nothing but name calling. There's no way to contact either one privately to take the matter off line. The questions that the originator of the thread originally asked have long been dealt with.

So what if it hasn't reached the level of some of the even less civil threads of late? It's a flame war now, pure and simple, and has no useful or interesting purpose.

ozstamps, as far as your comment about the nature of the CO board, we do have a few local curmudgeons (whom we mostly know and love by now) but by and large we're a pretty friendly place. It's just that we usually have so much less to complain about than some of the other airline boards that we have had to come up with ways to make the level of discussion a little more "exciting."

Yes, Oz, it is terribly disappointing. I am surprised that the search function turned up only 41 "search" responses - - it certainly seems like the number would be higher. Perhaps I'm recalling posts in which this poster posted a link with no other explanation. At any rate, locking the thread won't solve this problem, as it inevitably will surface again in another thread. The best that we can hope for is that this poster heeds our request for some common courtesy.

Yes, there is unnecessary roughness in that thread, thanks for the tip. I have sent a notice to desist to each of them involved and I am expecting their cooperative reply since we're not doing the threee strikes and you're out stuff here. I applaud many of you for stepping in and assisting. You all understand that this puts your request to have the color scheme changed in question. Cigarman really jumped in with both feet and he's got my attention. I'll try and save the "color change" police from using this as evidence.

Is this the letter you wanted randy to send????

I know there are times when anyone's comments can offend you, just the
same
with me. I only ask that you show better refrain when on FlyerTalk since
it's in the public domain and viewed by tens of not hundreds of
thousands of
others. We are always on display on how we behave online and I don't
want
the actions of others as well as ourselves to ever risk what we have to
offer and take away when on FlyerTalk. There is one particular thread
where
you and UpgradeMe seem to have exchanged points of view. I can either
kick
you both out of the game, warn you or do nothing about it. Well, others
online have noticed, so I can't do nothing. Consider this a warning to
restrict your online comments when on FlyerTalk only to the topic of
travel.
Any angst you need to display should only be directed toward travel
programs
and providers, not members of the community. This same warning is being
sent
to UpgradeMe.

Questions, email me back or feel free to call me.

My response: I try to let it die by just moving on, then the wonderful fellow and friend Upgrade me decides to continue to run with it.. and no one seemed to care (other than an occasional comment).. so I ran with it too.. All this over a simple question.. I'm sure if you wanted too, the reply "search" could be used on almost any question

Lets see if I'm booted now

Trojan Horse. One point worth noting is that your exchange in the CO thread that Randy closed, and the present one in the 'obese persons' one on The Buzz leaves no possibility for either you, nor the other protagonist/s to (a) contact each other or (b) be contacted by other members of FT to possibly assist you to finalise the argument.

Why? Because in both cases you AND the other poster do not have an email address showing. Without digging up the 400 old threads about whether SOME kind of email address might be mandatory here (I feel strongly they should) the fact remains, had you and your other differing posters had an email address, things may have cooled off before this. Why not consider getting a free email address to use just for FT? I must have sent and received well over 1,000 emails with other FT'ers off board, and often things can be settled via this method, as sensible advice really is abundant.

Randy's note seems very sensible and civilised to me. But right now he is the ONLY one to have access to your real email, so it should not need to come down to he or his staff sorting it, but you gave them no option. Vigorous on board discussions are not new on FT (I am the living proof of that!) but the language a number of you kept resorting too was not called for. As cigarman illustrated on the CO thread, the same effect can be achieved without bar room language. Now I discover he is 6'5" and xxx pounds, I am not going to argue with him again, but ply him with Cohibas instead.

Randy, I've read this post several times. Could you please clarify one point. I understand that apparently a post of mine caught you attention. Was it the request to change colors a few weeks back OR the sarcastic flame war post to try and calm it down? I can't really tell. Second, did I get your attention in a good or bad way? Just curious...

Oz,

Totally agree. Everyone should be required to have a valid email address on display.

Village Idiot - If you do a search for the word "idiot" on JUST posts appearing in The Buzz, you get 27, and none of them appear to be related to you.

None were locked down either.

I just tried the search thing for the first time just now. Pretty handy thing-a-ma-bob. Maybe I'll started using it so someone doesn't lay the smack-down on me for posting an already answered thread. Little disapointed searching for Idiot doesn't bring me up though. Working on getting the dictionary definition to include me
