PIT to BCN OK for to Shop w/ Orbitz & others?

PIT to BCN OK for to Shop w/ Orbitz & others?
I am looking to go PIT to BCN 11/8/2008-11/21/2008. I normally prefer to book w/ a carrier directly, but I am finding better priced fares on some of the "discount" travel sites.
A) Has anyone booked with Orbitz or the other discount websites for international flights that use more than one carrier?
B) And if there were problems while traveling, do the airlines help you (i.e. missed layover, canceled flight, flight switch b/c of a delay) or do they dismiss accountability b/c you didn't book through them directly.
C) Also any other advice would be a great help.
