Which Frequent Flyer program should I choose for this journey
Hello
I have a little question. This summer, im going to Australia from Denmark.
My flight is booked with Quantas.
On the tickets are these flights
Copenhagen - London (British Airways)
London - Bangkok (Quantas)
Bangkok - Sydney (Quantas)
Sydney - Brisbane (Quantas)
Cairns - Sydney (Quantas)
Sydney - Bangkok (Quantas)
Bangkok - London (Quantas)
London - Copenhagen (British Airways)
Today I have a membership of Eurobonus (Star Alliance), and KLM (Flying Blue)
I can't collect points from Quantas with my Eurobonus membership, since quantas doesn not give points for flights from Europe to Australia, this is in the rules of Eurobonus.
So which loyalty program should I choose for this flight, to get the most mileage to spend later on? I will probably never use Quantas again, as for when i fly with my job, it is 90% within Europe, so it is kinda waste for me to sign up for the Quantas Loyalty program, isn't it?
So what I am looking for is a "european" loyalty program, which will also allow me to collect points from this Quantas journey.
Looking forward to hear from some of you :-)

Welcome to FT and the OW forum, winsr!
The airline is called Qantas. Yes, there normally is a U after a Q but Qantas is an acronym and stands for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services.
Firstly, the location of your FFP doesn't really matter. It doesn't have to be European and you might even want to re-think your Eurobonus membership.
I am a CO frequent flyer but I have never in my life set foot on a CO plane. I am also a LH frequent flyer and they don't fly anywhere near Sydney at all. So the location of the program is only one factor and not always that important.
You don't give some very important information so I am making a few assumptions:
- you are flying economy class and will mostly fly economy within Europe
- you are mainly looking for a program to use the miles/points for award flights (this is not as obvious as it sounds to you probably. I am in Qantas because of Status, no because of free flights. I am with Asiana 100% because of their lifetime status, not anything else).
So if those assumptions are correct, then I would advise you to go with the American Airlines program. They offer very good earn/burn rates and low taxes for those flights. The only disadvantage for you might be that you do not get ANY points for BA operated flights between the UK and the US. You would either fly via Canada or use AA/IB/AQ etc.
Enjoy your stay in Australia.

Welome to FlyerTalk winsr,
Consensus is usually to join AAdvantage (as DownUnderFlyer has suggested), which typically offers the best earn/burn ratio. It will however, depend greatly on what fare code you are booked into. It's a bit of a long shot, but depending on which booking class you are booked in for your flights, based on the fact that you're based in Denmark, it may be worthwhile considering Finnair's program. Failing that, the Qantas scheme is reasonably generous in terms of earning miles, but as has been stated on FT many times, the burn rates are not particularly generous.
If you are able to tell us what fare code/booking class you are booked into (ie Q,V,S,N,O,M,B.H,Y etc) then we may be able to work out which program would get you the maximum earning from this trip.
Additionally, based on your itinerary, whilst you are on a BA flight from CPH-LHR, is it on the BA code, or is it on a QF code? This could make a slight difference to earning possibilities, particularly with the QF program.
If you can locate your fare/booking class, let us know and we can make a more educated suggestion.
Note: don't post your PNR or other details on here that could be identifiable.

Sorry, I can't see any specification of Class, other than "Economy", which is the same on all my flights. I can see my ticket on a site called www.virtuallythere.com.
I guess this isn't really enough?

Hi winsr,
If you visit http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/do/dyn/checkmytrip and enter your six digit PNR you should be able to view the whole booking. Click on the 'More flight info' link for each flight and it should show you the actual fare code in addition to Economy class.
Once we have this info we will be able to better advise the pros and cons of the different programs based on this itinerary.
Let us know how you go.

If crediting to Qantas, you would earn 10612 miles each way for the LHR-BKK-SYD plus 1000 e/w for SYD-BNE and 125 each way on BA
This would give a total of 23447 miles
This would be almost enough points for free o/w trip to the USA (25k required) or a r/t journey within Europe of up to 1200 miles each way (24k required)
The remaining 500 - 1500 can be purchased quite eeasily , or if hiring a car or staying at a hotel whilst away, could be able to get the remainder

Agree wholeheartedly with Dave Noble, QF Frequent Flyer will be best for this itinerary. If you joined BA Exec Club, you'd earn just on 6000 miles, which is good for a short one-way flight award such as LON-AMS, and if you joined AAdvantage you'd earn about 12,500 miles which is good for an internal US return flight, but not much else.

This table is not up to date but can be used as a guide: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/6004937-post7.html
As requested, below is a table showing "L" class FFP earning rates by airline flown/FFP.
Booking Class L - Redeemable miles/km per mile/km flown
* No AA credit on BA US-LON, no BA credit on AA US-LON and v.v.
** Most plans exclude AY "Excursion" (Y-only) flt nos.
*Pts - FFP uses distance-based points; No./pct varies by class/distance
I make no warranties regarding the completeness or accuracy of this. If you find a mistake, go here.
