So I've been trying to think about how to most effectively do a nested XONEX ticket. I'm now trying to get from ICN to DXB through SYD (to pick up the family) meet up with some friends and family, then to LHR to meet some more family, then send the family off to YYZ for an extended holiday while I make my way back to SYD. I'll then head to YYZ later in the summer (around late June).

I've been thinking with the current sale that it might not be a bad idea to try to book two XONEX's, but am asking for help from those who have done this type of thing before. Do you hold two tix and have one going westward and one going eastward? How do you get them to connect up?

I'm thinking of ex-ICN for the westward, and I guess ex-JNB for the eastward (since I could do LHR-JNB-SYD to return home quickly).

Any feedback, tips, tricks, etc. would be most appreciated.

I tried the search function using nested or nesting but didn't really find what I was hoping for.

Remember, too, that the optimum (read least costly) country for purchase may be different depending on the COS.

Well, you certainly won't find anything on the Oneworld website about "nested" tickets! But, as others have said, they're really two unrelated xONEx tickets, so there's nothing technically wrong with using parts of two different tickets alternately.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1. Each ticket MUST begin and end in the same country...except for places like the USA/Canada, KUL/SIN, and a few other exceptions. Yeah, you can throw away the last coupon, but you sure don't want to throw it away if it's worth 4000 miles!

2. The point at which you switch from Ticket 1 to Ticket 2 and back again will generally have to be the same place. So, pick a central point you would logically want to hit twice.

OK -- let's see what happens if you start in ICN, and go, say, ICN -- HKG -- SYD -- SIN -- DXB -- LHR on the westward ticket. Now, if you then switch to an eastward ticket ex-LHR, it will have to originate there. You can't originate the eastward ticket in JNB, and then start using it only in London.(You could possibly get from DXB to LHR via JNB, and switch tickets in JNB -- but why? )

Let's then say you go east to SYD from LHR on your #2 ticket. When you want to get to YYZ, you now have a choice -- do you use Ticket 2, and go SYD-LAX-YYZ? Or do you use Ticket 2 to go SYD-JFK-LHR, then pick up Ticket 1, and fly back LHR-YYZ-NRT-ICN? If you don't do the latter, how're you going to re-connect with Ticket 1? You can't just pick up Ticket 1 in YYZ and use it to ICN -- if you skip a coupon in the middle, you're using the coupons out of sequence, and that can void the ticket. Plus, you're then throwing away YYZ-LHR on Ticket 2.

Combining two east-around tickets or two west-around tickets is generally easier for just this sort of reason.
Example: East-around Ticket 1: SFO-LHR-HKG-DPS-HKG-SFO. Ticket 2: East around DPS-HKG-SFO-LHR-HKG-DPS.
The switch from Ticket 1 to Ticket 2 can take place at LHR, HKG, or DPS.
