Is it safe to book Malev ?

The last issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology has an article entitled "Moribund Malev" mentioning fleet reduction and major financial problems. Does anybody have any information on their life expectancy ?

I don't have any direct information on their life expectancy. However, I don't think it's serious enough to worry about them going under in the short-term. They've reoriented themselves as a regional carrier, cutting their losses on the two long-hauls to JFK and Toronto. Abramovich is not hurting for cash and Malev is bidding for the Serbian aircraft maintenance company (story here); so from this outsider's view it doesn't seem like too serious of a situation in the short term. Of course, it their new strategy is not successful then long-term survivability is a question. But IMHO, a buy-out is far more likely than going out of business.
