Post CO to join OneWorld?

Both the NY Times and WSJ are running articles suggesting that CO may leave SkyTeam and team up with AA and BA.

From WSJ:

Continental Sunday said it was open to other carriers seeking its membership in their respective global airline alliances, which allow carriers to more easily share passengers and give them greater reach around the world. American Airlines parent AMR Corp. has been trying to interest Continental in an alliance that could include both domestic and overseas passengers, said people familiar with the matter.

Continental is currently a member of the SkyTeam alliance. Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp., which have agreed to merge, also are in that alliance. "We are considering alternatives to SkyTeam as we carefully evaluate which major global alliance will be best for Continental over the long term," Mr. Kellner said.

Kellner said that. Interesting!

CO would be a decent addition to oneworld who need a little beefed up presence in the US market...

These comments came after the CO board voted not to merge with UA. But in general, I agree, anything coming out of these CEO's mouths could be simply positioning and not something they're considering seriously.

Welcome Continental to OneWorld!

LONDON (ShareCast) - British Airways led the way in the FTSE 100 today after it said it was in talks with US rivals American Airlines and Continental Airlines.

British Airways is exploring opportunities for co-operation with American Airlines and Continental Airlines, the airline said in a statement last night, without giving any more details.

The discussions are thought to centre on the possibility of Continental joining the OneWorld Alliance, which currently comprises BA, American Airlines and eight other airlines.

The tie-up would help BA and the other airlines streamline costs by enabling them to set prices and schedules. The current talks are unlikely to involve the possibility of a merger, which would be difficult given laws blocking foreign ownership of US airlines.

The admittance of Continental would be a significant boost for OneWorld Alliance and a blow to its rival SkyTeam Alliance, which currently counts Continental as one of its members. It would also help American Airlines and Continental compete with US rivals Delta and Northwest, which co-operate with SkyTeam partner Air-France KLM.

Continental said earlier this week that it was considering alternatives to its membership of the SkyTeam alliance. Other OneWorld members include Japan Airlines and Australias Qantas.

I would give a hug to Continental! They will certainly give a big boost in North America network! And plus the wonderful trip from HNL via Guam and other islands to Hong Kong!! Which is one of the must do trips if you are going to flying around the world. Plus the network from North America to Hong Kong and Japan. There will be more choice!!!

Welcome to OW? I have read what you posted and can't quite see where it says that CO has joined OW.

Agree w/ the previous poster - this is a very misleading title. Nothing has been decided yet.

To the OP - I suggest you consider changing it. If you wish to do so, click on the triangle next to your post and ask that it be changed.

Thank you but I would not change my title.

It is not misleading. It is confirming.

This piece of news is from FTS100 which, can not be wrong.

If you think "Welcome Continental to OneWorld" = "Welcome Continental joining OneWorld", it is your problem.
