Really, I didn't know that. I think last time I did an overnight transit was before they raised the rates, so I probably didn't even notice it... now it's just painful.

To my knowledge I've never been charged APD for such stops. Just had a look at the official Customs site and they talk about 24 hours, but it's all shrouded in very confusing language. Got a link that is easier (for me) to read?

Edit 2. and this is the section I read:

"Where the second of two flights (flight B) is an international flight (that is from the UK to an international destination), flight B is treated as connected if its booked time of departure falls within 24 hours of the scheduled time of arrival of the first flight (flight A)"
