One World To Moscow

Flying to Moscow in December should I take Iberia thru Madrid or BA thru London?

Also will be in St Petersburg--Any Hotel suggestions?

I have just been without bags for 5 days in Sweden due to the BA/LHR debacle. ANYwhere but LHR if checking bags. ANYwhere! (Is Tranquility Base still open?)

via LHR without a shadow of a doubt.

Going via MAD means enduring an 5 hour redeye (dep MAD 22:50 arr LED 05:20) on a short-haul configured A319. Regardless of whether you are in Y, or J it will be a horrible journey - with no chance to sleep. I assume you would route AUS-ORD-MAD-LED?

You could look into AY if you are really keen on retaining AA miles and avoiding LHR but that would require a routing of AUS-DFW-JFK-HEL-LED, i've not checked total journey times but would expect it to be a bit longer than the journey via LHR. Smirnoff over on the BA Board has taken the time to do a couple of trip reports of both AYs long, and short-haul J service and would appear to rate them very highly.

The shortest journey time looks to be with AA/BA routing AUS-ORD-LHR-LED.

I would go on BA, though LHR might be a hassle these days (due to summer holiday and all).

Another vote for Finnair if you're planning on Y or J. HEL is a great transfer to/from LED when I did it earlier this year.

Only hotel I've ever stayed in St. Pete's was the Helvetia on Marata Ul. just off Nevsky Pr. and not far from Moscow Station and it was just fine (left a review and pics on tripadvisor).

Or JAL via Tokyo if you *really* like to fly.
