Itinerary help: Europe

We are planning to include JNB-MAD...FCO-JFK as part of a DONE4. We would like to fit IST, BUD, LED (St Petersburg), FCO and ATH into this, which means purchasing at least one extra segment.

What would be the best way to get to MAD, IST, BUD, LED, FCO and ATH as part of this? I'm open to buying another segment or a cheap flight.

We did something pretty similar to this last year.

You won't be able to fly directly to/from all these places on a DONE as you have restricted sectros. The question is how much overland travel you would want to do which depends on how long you have...

But you might be able to get some flights on the cheapo (LCC) airlines if you want to fly between these points.

The trick is to work out which sectors are better used on a DONE. We decided it was best to use these where there was no LCC competing on the route.

One possible suggestion:

MAD-IST(DONE Sector 1)-(Easy Jet flight)-LON-LED(2)-HEL(3)-ATH(4)-BUD(5)-(WizzAir)-Rome

But I am sure there are other permutations on this theme if you look around.

You can't, but BUD has a lot of LCC flights. So maybe MAD-ATH-BUD-LED-BUD for your 4 segs and then BUD-IST-FCO for a separate purchased ticket. There is no way to do it on the OWE even with purchased segments (and they count to the 20 seg limit).

Try this routing: jnb-mad-ist-bud-ath-hel-fco-jfk

You need to buy 1 extra segment for this, or purchase a One World Visit Europe pass when you buy your DONE4, or purchase one of the segments using a discount airline (although you probably won't get extremely low fares on any of these segments), or take the overnight train between Istanbul and Budapest.

As for St Petersburg, it is an easy 5 hour train ride to/from St Petersburg, see: http://www.seat61.com/Finland.htm#Moving%20on

And don't forget to check out Tallin, a cute UNESCO city that is easily reachable from Helsinki, as well.

Have fun!
