Skipping a sector

I am currently in the middle of an AONE3. My next sectors are LHR to ORD on BA, ORD to SFO on AA and SFO to HKG on CX.

If I skip the ORD to SFO sector (because I may take other fligths between ORD and SFO) will the following sectors ex SFO be cancelled?

Airlines do try to cancel follow-on sectors if you miss one. How well this works depends on the airlines involved. Technically you must reissue the ticket and pay the change fee to skip a sector. Sometimes a sector can be skipped, accidentally or on purpose, but it is against the fare rule. Again enforcement varies with the airlines involved. AA has the best computer system for enforcing this, and CX works well with AA, so chances are that it will be automatically canceled and CX won't let you fly without a reissue. However mistakes do happen, so the results vary randomly. Depends how much time you have for a reissue, or whether you care if you miss the SFO-HKG flight by a day.

In the old days of paper tickets (and open segments - where the ticketing was separate from the reservation(s)) I did this a couple of times - once throwing away the coupons myself, and the other where an agent threw away unused coupons. Either the agent(s) are laid back and don't care or they don't know/understand the rules. The rules on the pper tickets clearly stated that the coupons had to be used in the order in which they appeared.

How about open-dating the ORD-SFO segment. Then when you pop up in SFO Cathay will have had no reason to cancel their segment(s). If it's an e-ticket I suppose the agent doing the check-in will be reminded by HAL that you didn't fly the previous segment and may or may not charge you $125 for your transgression. Under those circumstances I doubt that even CX would charge you, though.
