Changing routing on AAward before 1st flight

Changing routing on AAward before 1st flight
As part of my first segment I am currently scheduled to fly ORD-JFK-MAD on a mileage based OneWorld AAward
I know I could send back the ticket and re-ticket, but that would involve checking AAward space for the whole itn [unlikely].
I know generally you cannot change routing, but since this is the first segment if ORD-MAD direct opens up before flight time can I change this paying a re ticketing fee?

No. One of the downsides of the OW awards is that no voluntary re-routing is allowed, ever, in fact you cannot even change carriers on the same route (e.g if ticketed MIA-MAD on IB you cannot change to MIA-MAD on AA). This restriction significantly lessens the value of the award, so AA tightly enforces the rule.
