A friend's daughter is off on her gap year travels shortly and I have advised her that she should join a FFP to collect miles but which one? I know that the BAEC only credits 25% miles flown for Y travel. Bearing in mind that she is off to Uni after this and will probably use her miles for shorthaul flights would QF be better and can she even join? Also is redeeming QF miles similar to BA miles and do they come out of the same bucket? Thanks.

Sort of depends on where she's going and with who. Have a look at post no. 7 here - http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=338667

Thanks Gardyloo, I read that and thought that maybe QF was best. Her first flight is on BA to South America where she travels around for a couple of months then on to NZ/OZ and back through Asia so she won't be on BA again until her flight back to the UK. How easy is it for a UK resident to redeem from say QF FFP? AY also looks generous but are there any pitfalls. I know about the BAEC - how do the other OneWorld programmes compare especially for a novice.

Though not status earning with the exception of LA and BA, their programme is quite good.. just 20K miles and she can get a domestic US/Canada award on Alaska Airlines! And miles don't expire either.. well, not as quickly as QF's programme anyway! And in future, she may earn mileage and redeem awards on AF, KL, CO, NW, DL in addition to above partners!

Actually if you can limit the number of flights she can take on BA and stick with as much of AA, QF, CX and maybe even LA, the best programme she can get is ALASKA MVP. As they give 100% mileage to L class on AA, QF, CX and LA. Okay she still gets 25% on BA...
