Upgradinga RTW ticket half way through

Hey guys,

I amcurrently in the middle of a rtw ticket with the family. We are all in J however my mother is now fed up with J and wants an F ticket, is there any way to upgrade her for the rest of the ticket?

Our routing is JNB-LHR-JFK-BOS-ORD-SFO-LAX-SYD-ADL-SYD-JNB

I am currently in BOS?

If I can then who should I call to get her upgraded for the rest?

Can she use miles to upgrade her self on the QF legs from lax-syd and syd-jnb?

Cheers

Matt

She could reticket as a AONE4 (pay fare difference, change fee), loses the benefit of F for the flights already taken and only benefits for LAX-SYD and SYD-JNB in any case (already in F BOS-ORD-SFO-LAX and no F SYD-ADL-SYD).

If she has enough QFF miles (ie lots) and there is availability then yes can upgrade on LAX-SYD and SYD-JNB.

She has hundredsof thousands of BA miles, but I think RTW is ticketed as D class so will that work for her to upgrade the flights on QF with BA miles?

On QF operated flights only QFF miles can be used to upgrade. BA, AA or any other miles cannot be used to upgrade QF flights (whether or not on a codeshare).

I'm sorry. A RTW with family and a mother fed up with J? How did you end up in this situation? This sounds awful.

Exactly my thoughts. Why would she be fed up? And would it really be better in F? Unless money doesn't matter (but clearly it does as you would have booked the RTW in F in the first place otherwise), I would tell her to stick it out in C.

I wonder how she'll feel after she flies BOS-ORD-SFO-LAX on AA? Lookout! You might be springing for some Netjets time!

Might I suggest a small reroute which might help your mother with her diet (i.e. being less fed up). Instead of BOS-ORD-SFO, you might try BOS-JFK-SFO which will land you on a 767-200 in a pretty good business class or a 767-300 in a real international business class (or as real as AA get) instead of the MD-80 domestic "First" on BOS-ORD-SFO.

AA flies BOS-SFO non-stop, so presumably the stop in ORD is for a reason....

Given that the only flights left on the ticket which have a difference in seating are LAX-SYD and SYD-JNB, it really isn't worth making the change. Some points to consider: SYD-JNB is not always operated with an F cabin; there is some chance that there won't be one on the date you want, and downgrade from A to D is zero compensation. LAX-SYD has rather poor F service, though it varies a lot between flights. The reason is simple: QF reduced the layover time at LAX for crews, so they no longer have time to shop and sightsee as well as rest. So some crews rest, others do stuff in LAX and try to rest on the first half of the SYD-LAX flight. Or so it seems.

Maybe an "accidental" downgrade to steerage would make her more appreciative of J.

I didn't realise you can do that! Given the thread on J/F taxes from India, I wonder if you might be able to ticket a LONEx in India then get it retickets in J/F as soon as you leave the country as a means to avoid the tax. Not sure it'd ever be worth it but uncovering kinks in the system always appeals.

You can do that, but taxes are computed based on country of original issue, so the 12% India luxury tax would then be added. Of course it might take a few weeks for the airlines to update their systems to compute this correctly.
