Yeah - not good (even economy awards can be difficult on that route).
Book as early as possible, be flexible about dates, and if award rules permit consider using Air Pacific via NAN - seems to have much better availability (even QF via SYD/MEL/BNE generally has better award availability than the nonstop).

change in plans
As expected, I am now on iteration #5. While I may still try to book more direct flights on the outbound, I have had good luck getting award tickets on CX. If I cannot get the non-stop flight from JFK to HKG, I will try on different routing via YVR or SFO. Anyway, below is my current thinking -
MCO - AKL (via MIA-JFK-HKG) on AA and CX
AKL - SYD (QP)
SYD - BKK (BA or QP)
BKK - JNB (via HKG on CX)
JNB - TLV (via LHR on BA) backup plan would be IB via MAD
TLV - FCO (via LHR on BA) (or a Royal Jordanian (if OW) non-stop from AMM)
FCO - MAD (IB)
MAD - MCO (via MIA on IB & AA)
I calculate 15 segments and 30,324 miles (assuming that the actual miles from MCO-AKL do not include the actual routing). I am considering starting and ending at JFK (buying a Jetblue RT) which could eliminate 3 segments (no real change in miles). I could then use these segments and 3k-4k miles in regional flights.
I would appreciate any feedback. Everyone has been a big help.
