Newbie RTW question

Newbie recommended to Flyertalk would appreciate any suggestions and ideas (a bit overwhelmed by all the info) - thanks.

Have been told that a OneWorld Explorer DONE4 ticket from Istanbul might be a good option (Cost approx USD 4500?). Might give two round trips to the US from the miles gained.

Data:
Based - Oslo, Norway OSL
Age: 35
Purpose: Private and business (own private company)
Generally felxible
Want a good long term global flying setup
Have membership with Star Alliance (15 000 miles)
Have membership with Delta Air Skymiles (10 000 miles)
Traveling regularily every year to Salt Lake City and San Francisco
Most flights out of Oslo are Star Alliance based

Vissiting this time (within 12 months):

Oslo
Amsterdam
New York
Washington D.C.
Miami
Salt Lake City
San Francisco
Guatemala City (November 2006 for conference)
Caribbean (Would like to go to a dreambeach somewhere in the Caribbean for a weekend)
Rio De Janeiro
Manila, Philippines
Hong Kong
Singapore
Oslo

RTW question

Welcome to FT!

If you don't have to go to Rio de Janeiro a DONE3 will be enough for your needs. If you have to go there maybe a separate ticket and a DONE3 is a better choice.

OSL-LHR-AMS/AMS-LHR-NYC/NYC-WAS/WAS-MIA/MIA-DFW-SLC/SLC-DFW-SFO/SFO-DFW-GUA/GUA-MIA-Caribbean/Caribbean-MIA-GIG/GIG-JFK-HKG-MNL/MNL-HKG/HKG-SIN/SIN-HEL-OSL

A couple issues:

1. You will have to pay for an extra stopover in NA.

2. 23 segments is 3 segments too many.

Solution either drop NYC-WAS and purchase separately (puddle jumper AE service) or take the train. Drop SA trip to GIG as part of ONE and reduced DONE4 to DONE3. Fly to GIG in conjunction with your NYC stopover to reduce NA stopovers; upon return take separately purchased air or train to WAS. This will bring your total segments down to 20 and reduce the number of NA stopovers to 6. Savings: about $1500 USD which should cover the trip to GIG from JFK.

OSL-LHR-AMS/AMS-LHR-JFK/<insert separately purchased GIG trip here>/WAS-MIA/MIA-DFW-SLC/SLC-DFW-SFO/SFO-DFW-GUA/GUA-MIA-Caribbean/Caribbean-JFK-HKG-MNL/MNL-HKG/HKG-SIN/SIN-HEL-OSL

Booked separately: JFK-GIG roundtrip options: in Y class and upgrade with miles (if you have AAdvantage miles). Options:
1. Purcgase a discounted Y ticket for $981 and upgrade 25000 AAdvantage miles and $250 co-pay each way. Total $1481 (if you have AAdvantage miles)
2. Or pay about $1800 for a B fare (that's a guess - you iwll need to call AA for the cost and availability of B fare) and upgrade with 20000 AAdvantage miles and no co-pay (if you have AAdvantage miles)
3. Or pay about $6000 for a J ticket.
4. Or fly coach class for $981.
5. Or save GIG trip for another time.

As the OP lives in a *A hub, and mostly flies *A perhaps a *A RTW would be better. Including south america on a *A RTW is a challenge (since they are distance based) but doable.

Not a bad idea, however the OP's itinerary is 45151 miles which is a little beyond the 39000 threshold of the *A ATW ticket.

First, welcome to FT.

Next, your pricing info is outdated - look at the "sticky" threads at the top of the forum for more recent prices. Living in Norway, I think you'd find DONE4 pricing originating in Sweden would be preferable to Turkey. Because there's no Oneworld service between Sweden and Norway, your stayover in Oslo would have to be made on separate tickets because otherwise you'd run out of European segments and/or stopover allowances on the OWE.

The following route would get you more or less where you want to go, with only minor exceptions.

ARN-MAD-GUA-MIA-SXM-JFK//DCA-SLC//SFO-JFK-GIG-SCL-xLAX-HKG-MNL-HKG-SIN-HKG-AMS-MAD-ARN

You'd need to travel overland between New York and Washington but that's easy; also there's no AA service between Salt Lake and San Francisco, but there are inexpensive flights (or the train) that could be used instead.

You're allowed a second entry/exit of N. America if it's without a stopover en route to/from Asia, so in this case you could go from GIG to JFK, or via Santiago to JFK or LAX and then on to HK for your Manila/HK/Singapore segments. Then HK to AMS (or SIN to HEL, etc.) to complete the trip in Europe.

If you signed up for the AA Platinum Challenge before starting, you'd hit Plat early on and get 100% miles bonus (in addition to class of service bonuses) for most of the trip. Quite a lot of miles would ensue.

But you can tweak it to cover most of the places under 39,000 and significantly under if south america is no longer required.

Gardyloo, excellent itinerary! Good catch on the DCA-SLC direct flight, I missed that along with pretty much everything else. I noticed, after rereading my previous post with the "so called" itinerary that I put together that it was totally not allowed under the ONE rules. I added this disclaimer and left it the way it was to highlight what not to do (way too many segments in NA). Sorry if I contributed to anyones confusion with that whacko itinerary. I really do not know where my mind was when I put it together.
