Anyway, my main question is - I'm thinking of getting a one-way ticket to Sri Lanka. Presumably I'd have arranged a ticket for pick up when I arrive, and therefore have documentation to support this, will I still encounter any problems with the airline (on my way to CMB) and/or immigration at CMB?
You should have no problems "with the airline" nor immigration. My dealings and experiences with Sri Lanka, in booking flights or actually travelling have been great.

Agreed. I had a check-in agent at AKL on an AKL-SYD-HKG-CMB flight who wanted me to have tickets out from CMB, but I convinced him he was totally off base and he let me go.

I'd like to book a DONE4 ex-CMB now that flights have resumed, but it seems I have a problem with this "10 day" rule. I need to book before May (although starting the RTW next Feb) in order to get 20 segments before the new 16 segment rule applies, so it appears I would need to wire the money since I'd have to pick up the ticket within ten days if paying by CC?

I'd rather book with AA, but it seems the results here have been less than encouraging

There was no "10 Day Rule" in place in August 05 for my travel commencing in October that year.

I simply arrived at the airport and collected my tickets on a turnaround.

Actually, no.

At the time the CX agent had a 3% fee for CC payments; I used international money transfer, saving ~USD200. (See my post here June 28, 06)

I did need to email them a scanned image of my PP photo page.

They would have happily accepted CC payment (with the 3%) - all that would have been required were scanned images of both sides of the CC - still with airport ticket collection.

Yes. Now possibly when ticketed through a Canadian TA at the ex-CMB rate.
