My ticket was issued by AA. CX is now charging approximately U$D 40 to make even the simplest change on ANY type ticket not issued by them.

When did this start?

Last year. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=637483

BA started a couple of years ago or earlier. At least CX's $40 is better than QF's A$75 or BA's GBP25 (or is it more by now?) which applies even to tickets issued by themselves.

Could you not just call AA's round-the-world desk and have them make the change?
