Infant Fares
Hi
I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding infant fares? My wife and I are travelling on an LONE3 somewhere in the middle of that ticket it looks like our first child will be born!
We will have the following routing to complete with a baby.
HKG-DXP-HKG-LHR-EDI-MAN
Rather than paying 10% of the full price economy ticket for each leg it would be cheaper to get an infant rtw and then try to reclaim the unused parts of the ticket if this is possible.
My question is can a rtw infant ticket be issued without issuing accompanying adult tickets as my wife and I already have our UK issued tickets? And any other advice you may have.
Apologies in advance for anyone who is seated near us once we are travelling with an infant!
Thanks

You'd have to buy a 2nd RTW ticket for your wife. The reason is that all RTW tickets require going RTW and cannot be used for a partial trip (they have penalty clauses, varies by type of product, but basically increases the price a lot, in the case of the LONE3 it recalculates using Y fares); and infants must be accompanied. So you must have an adult booked for all sectors that the infant has. Maybe the airline will let you retroactively add an infant to your existing RTW ticket, but I doubt it. I've never seen any mention of this in a fare rule. I suspect you get to pay 10% of the point-to-point fares (which might be more than a full LONE3 ticket costs). Probably the most cost-effective is to buy a new LONE3 HKG-MAN-US-HKG for one adult+infant and use that for the return to UK, and then one adult does a quick UK-US-HKG-UK run using the rest of the new ticket plus the remaining old ticket.
Edited to clarify that I assumed the OP had already bought and used the LONE3 ticket. If not already issued the solution is easy, add the infant fare from the beginning even if travel commences prior to birth. Of course flying 14 hour segments while pregnant is a different issue.

I am not entirely sure whether you have already started on this RTW or are considering ticketing it and starting. if the latter, we were in the exact same situation (but DONE4). we bought an INF ticket for our soon to be born daughter (we waited till we were sure of the sex and put the name we knew we would give her on the ticket). we did get a few weird looks for the first part of the DONE4 when we checked in without the INF and when we pointed to my wife's belly. basically for the segments before she was born, the coupons were "thrown out".
I would have thought that a 10% INF fare for an LONE3 would only be a couple of hundred dollars. I don't believe you can re-claim unsued portions of RTW tickets.
Ofcourse the answer would be different if you are already in the midst of your LONE3 - and I don't know the answer.

mini-alect now at 18 months has been fortunate enough to experience the CX Wing Cabanas both in and ex utero. Will do so again in the next 3 weeks.
