So I paid the USD 35 to get into the AA arrivals lounge. Great shower. OK food. Free local calls to London. Quiet. Totally worth it, and there was no wait for a shower.
The checkin woman mentioned that the fee was supposed to be USD 40 as of 1 December, but she had accidentally let me in at the lower (old) rate. The web site still said USD 35 as of tonight.

This has happened to me also.

Bags go through...
It shouldnt be a problem to check bags through to your final destination. I do this regulary because from my hometown airport in europe theres only a Lufthansa connection to Heathrow and I prefer American to fly to US. So I buy a cheap Lufthansa ticket and check it directly to AA. No problems in nearly 40 itinerarys !
And because you are going on with another oneWorld airline they wont trouble you (...at least it's my impression)
It's important that you show them a ticket (paper or etix reciept) at check-in !
Nice flight !

My flights went well, thanks.
Bags checked through just fine, as folks predicted. AA was nice enough to put a note in my reservation that my AA PLT challenge was in progress and that I would have earned the requisite EQPs in LHR on my way back. The lounge gatekeeper at the AC in LHR was nice enough to let me in. In other words, a completely successful flight.
As a result of all this, I'll be booking my next overseas trip on AA-BA, much like this one.
Thanks to all for your help.
P.S. If you have to fly economy, WT+ is totally worth it.
