Flying with __ (operated by __)?

What does this mean? I'm flying with China Airlines (operated by Vietnam Airlines) from Taipei - Sydney via SGN. This is to get to where I depart on the RTW trip.

Also, how are the Vietnam planes (if this is what i'm flying on)? They seem old and simple from what other's have told me. Are they comfortable and safe?

Thanks!

It means that for all practical purposes you are flying on Vietnam Airlines.

Safety-wise I think you'll find this means that you are somewhat safer than you would be on China Airlines (operated by China Airlines).

Okay, so this means that the physical plane that I'll be flying on is Vietnam Air and not a China Air plane?
