I wanted to post a confirmation that I was able to ticket an itenerary with 16 segments + an openjaw between the first and last destinations.

Connecting or stopping over in the final destination earlier in the itenerary is specifically forbidden.
I would have much rather had my last segment be HKG-LAX, but could not do that as I was hitting LAX earlier in the itenerary and settled for HKG-SFO for my last segment.
Good luck.

As a further point of clarification, the definition of 'city' in 'cannot connect or stopver in destination city' is quite loose.
e.g. Los Angeles includes LAX, BUR, ONT, SNA and SBA
This has forced me to start my OW220C itinerary in SAN and is especially galling because most revenue fares that I have seen do not include SBA as a co-terminal with LAX
