Lan Movie Gaff

I know.. this isn't AA, but it is LAN a one world AA partner (moderators take note).

Peru slams LAN for in-flight film 'trashing' image
LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - Chilean airline LAN
came under fire Friday for an in-flight film
that Peruvian lawmakers said portrayed Peru as a "pigsty" --
showing a man urinating in the street, a road strewn with
litter and children clinging to the back of buses.
LAN hastily withdrew the 30-minute movie, which it said it
had been showing on all flights, and apologized after the
Peruvian Congress demanded a urgent explanation and Peru's
civil aviation authority called for sanctions.
Jacques Rodrich, head of the transport commission of
Congress, called the video "an outrage, unnecessary, absurd."
Lawmaker Luis Gonzales Posada agreed. "You can't portray
Peru as a pigsty," he told RPP radio.
Congress summoned the foreign trade and transport ministers
to explain the affair next week. Lawmakers also demanded
executives of LanPeru, the airline's local subsidiary, to
appear before Congress.
"We express our sincere apologies ... for having aired the
video, whose main aim was to promote adventure tourism," Emilio
Rodriguez Larrain, president of LanPeru, said in a letter to
the head of Congress.
The company said it bought the video from U.S. company DMX
In-flight, and acknowledged it contained 7-year-old images.
A LanPeru spokeswoman said the company had shown the movie
without actually seeing it. "That was our mistake," she said.
No one at Orange, California-based DMX In-flight was
immediately available for comment.
The spokeswoman said any suggestion the company was seeking
to damage Peru's image was "unthinkable."
Rodrich said, "It was very negligent of LAN to show a
7-year-old video without checking its content."
LAN has been planning to turn Lima's newly revamped airport
into its hub for South American flights. LanPeru is Peru's
biggest airline, operating 11 national and 11 international
routes a day.

So what was DMX thinking, using a video for "tourism promotion" showing people urinating in the street???

I'll bet someone with LAN who was charged with reviewing / selecting in-flight entertainment is either ex-LAN or not sitting down for a few days. As Mr. Spiff would say, Idiotas! Especially given there is considerable nationalistic sensitivity in that neck of the world (also), and I will bet there is more than a little political motive here - given Aerocontinente's closure and resentment of LAN's involvement in Peruvian aeronautics (bets thing that could happen, given the state of Peruvian aeronautics over the years - though I am admittedly biased, with a family member perishing on one of the infamous LANSA flights.)

Mind you, I have certainly seen what the article mentions in Per, as well as in a number of other countries - even in Japan, I have seen men urinating in the street. What I have not seen is an airline video depicting it.

Mr. / Ms. Moderator, would this better serve the readers of the oneworld forum?
