Common use of self-service check-in

Buried about halfway down this very jargon-heavy press release from OW:

Looks like being able to use my QF Platinum to SSCI with BA is becoming a reality ^

Unfortunately not! Yes, common use kiosks will be in place, but that will mean the user simply selects the airline they are travelling on and then prompts the user to put in their booking reference (Amadeus, Sabre, Galaleo etc) and off they go rather than the use of their frequent flyer cards to access the relevant booking. Although to be fair, I can't see why that could not be extended to that use - this though would require all the alliance partners to ensure that either their cards are keyed in common way or develop standards across the alliance on how to extract the required data from a frequent flyer card. Remember that some airlines don't even have magnatic strips on their frequent flyer cards although having said that, I think Oneworld generally do (perhaps not AA base members). In addition to the problems I have mentioned above, you also need to remember that there are several booking systems in use by airlines with frequent flyer numbers being stored in various ways. This will further complicate the above.

My personal view is that use of alliance cards to access and check into your booking is probably a few years off with all the data integration issues.

Remember that you can already SSCI as long as you have your booking reference!
