baggage allowance

I just red in AA.com the following:

For flights to international destinations

2 pieces checked and one carry-on
Please note that one carry-on personal item (see "Carry-on Allowance") does not count toward the free bag allowance.

The size limitation of your luggage is calculated by adding the total outside dimensions of each bag, that is, length + width + height.

Two checked bags at 62 in/157 cm each
One carry-on bag at 45 in/114 cm
Tickets Issued before March 1, 2005
The maximum weight per checked bag is 70 lbs/32 kgs.

Tickets Issued on or after March 1, 2005
The maximum weight per checked bag is 50 lbs/23 kgs

Bags checked to/from Japan will initially be exempt from the new maximum bag weight of 50lbs/23kg pending approval from the Japanese government. The maximum free bag weight for checked bags to/from Japan will continue to be 70lbs/32kg until further notice.

So is the new baggage alloawance for XONEX = 23kg X 2? or still 32Kg X2?

The OneWorld site shows differing baggage limits, depending on where the flight originates. The most liberal:

Travel to/ from/ via USA, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America & Australia (except travel wholly between Europe and South America and Spain & the Caribbean and travel wholly between South and Central America).

Two (2) pieces 32kg (70lbs) each piece with total dimensions 158cm (62ins) allowed for each piece

Then, it lists:

All other International routes (including travel wholly between Europe and South America, Spain & the Caribbean and travel wholly between South and Central America

First 40kg (88lbs)
Business 30kg (66lbs)
Economy 20kg (44lbs)
British Airways Premium Economy and Economy 23kg (51lbs)

So, I guess you need to look at your itinerary and chose the most restrictive luggage limit for any one flight sector.

The One World Explorer and Global Explorer tickets both have the piece based luggage allowance for the whole itinery so on most carriers that would be 2 pieces of no more than 32Kg each ; I don't know what will occur with AAs new screwed up 23Kg limit per bag; for me it is yet another incentive to use another carrier.

AA will collect the overweight fee for bags over 50 lbs. No way around this and it applies to all AA flights world-wide (once they get the Japanese govt to agree to the change, until then NRT gets 70 lb bags for free). Luckily the fee is nominal (USD 25) and I can't remember the last time I actually had a bag that weighed over 50 lbs. It is an interesting burp in the OW system but hardly the first. AA will let you have a carry-on of up to 40 lbs for free, though (whereas most other airlines are a bit saner and won't allow that much weight above your head).
