The trick is I need to reissue anyway if I use the tickets; our planned trips fell through this year, so if I used the RTW it would only be for mileage accrual (how awful of me ). I had LAX-SJO open dated segments (and AA no longer flies this route). If I ended up not having to reissue for changing the CAI-LHR segment, would ~4 hrs be enough at LAX if I had enough time?

eg.
Sep4 CAI-LHR-LAX
* reissue
Sep4 LAX-JFK
Sep5 BOS-DFW-ANC-DFW
etc.

Should be more than enough.

I have no idea if TA issued tickets are different, these are for airline issued tickets (both AA and other airlines have been the same). I suppose you can always get it refunded in Cairo in EGP but then you have exchange controls to deal with (impossible to take the money out of Egypt, so this is a good idea only if you have EGP denominated expenditures coming up soon).
Three years ago I had to refund an ex-JNB AONE4. I had bought it when the exchange rate was around ZAR15=GBP1. When I refunded it the rate had dropped to ZAR13=GBP1. I made a tidy profit out of the exchange rate change.

hauteboy - if the same applies to you, your extra costs in purchasing the new ticket will be largely covered by gain on the refunded amount.

I arrived in LHR this morning for the outbound leg to WAW. I went to the BA Ticket Desk in T1 Zone R and asked for the change to be "stickered." The agent tapped at the keyboard, pulled out his book of stickers and duely made the change. No questions asked.

I then went to the check-in desk and had my outbound BP issued (BA Miles booking). The lady checking me in was a little perplexed as to why I was coming straight back but issued the return BP with no problem. She was genuinely interested about my trip and I then spent about 5 minutes (there was no one behind me) explaining to her why I was doing what I was doing.

I wonder if what transpired means there's no chance that a computer in an accounting department might notice the change and attempt to charge you correctly.

I have changed the date of the first flight ex-CAI with no issues. I called the AA RTW desk and they made the change without mentioning anything about getting the ticket reissued.

According to the rules, prior to departure, for travel originating in areas 2/3, unlimited changes permitted without charge.
