Upgrade/Downgrade on AONE and DONE fares...

Hello OWers

2 Questions about OWexplorer fares...

AONE:
Can this fare be downgraded to DONE w/o penalty?

DONE:
Can this fare be upgraded w/o penalty?

Tickets would both be used for 3 continent travel originating and returning to the US.

On an AONEx you may choose to fly a class lower than A. On many routes, of course, A is not offered and so you must do that. But if after booking an A segment the airline inconveniences you in some way - e.g. by substituting an aircraft without enough first-class seats, or heaven forbid overbooking the first class cabin - my experience has been that if you whimper a bit you'll receive a little compensation. AA's dole seems to be 8000 FF miles. CX has been noted here as being much more generous. Those are gifts, not perks.

I'm not sure that was the question the OP was asking...

So upgrade is clearly no problem - although to make sense you would probably want to do it before starting the journey.

Downgrades (except of the type that JohnAx mentions due to lack of First on a route) are more problematic. I suspect that would be a cancel and reissue if it was before your first flight, and it muight be tricky to do after the first flight.

I don't understand why you would want to do this though? Chronic indecision?

Lol! Heavens no I have two seperate reservations, a three continent and a four continent journey. the Three is in F the Four is in J. Thanks for clearing the rules though. I want to downgrade the three continent because one of its sectors isn't in F and there are only 4 sectors. The J I want to upgrade, because as of now, everything is in J. I think I'll upgrade the J RTW trip and leave the F RTW trip alone. If I am going to get a 10% cancellation fee, it really doesn't save me that much money.

Does this mean you're an engineer, or are other professions prone to that kind of behavior?

Yep, systems engineer (software). One of those who is forever re-re-designing already fully debugged systems, looking for that extra nanosecond enhancement. Totally stupid, I know, so I left that one year ago, hired a far more clever/sensible senior developer to look after the joint, and now waste my time re-re-designing back to back OWE itineraries. More fun this way.
