Question Effects of involuntary schedule changes?

I have, as part of a ticketed, 20 segment DONE5, two fully dated paper coupons ...LAX-SJO-LAX, using two non-stops that allowed me a 10 hr layover in SJO.

AA has now cancelled the non-stops and automatically changed my itinerary (no advice given, just happened to see it today in aa.com): LAX-MIA-SJO-MIA-LAX, leaving me a 2 hr layover in SJO.

So,

1. All I now get to see at SJO is the airport.
2. I get two extra transcons ^ on 757s
3. More miles/points. ^
4. AA did the right thing and found a workaround for me. ^
5. I am just not so sure the workaround suits me.

My question: do I let things stand? Would I be able to move the dates around on those SJO/MIA segments independently or are they 'married' to the MIA/LAX flights because they are not 'real' segments?

The last thing in the world I now want is to play around with the SJO stop if it means a messy/costly reissue, even though it all came around completely involuntary, so I hesitate to call AA before getting some advice from the pros here.

Thanks.

Didn't AA just increase the LAX-SJO non-stops? The double miles bonus is in the current AAdvantage Newsletter, code SJO2X

When I was in a similar situation (AA schedule change that required rerouting, on a OWE issued on AA stock), the AA RTW desk was very flexible in giving me options to get where I'd planned to go. It sounds like you'd like to add a stopover in MIA, and, even if AA goes along with that, it's hard for me to see how you'd be able to avoid a reissue. I don't think there's any way they'd issue you a MIA-SJO boarding pass in LAX if you're doing a stopover in MIA -- that sounds like a reissue to me.

If I were you, I'd come up with a prioritized list of revised itineraries that you'd like (including the LAX-MIA-SJO-MIA-LAX solution that AA has proposed), and give the AA RTW desk a call. (Though I'd have to say that the prospect of a LAX-MIA-SJO-MIA-LAX mileage run in the delightful 757 gives me the shakes.)
