Using American Airlines Miles

Hi all. I am planning to use AA miles to book 4 economy tix for 112,000 points total... ticket value is $1700 for the 4 tix. Is this a decent deal / value? Is there a better way to book for less points? Going from MIA to PHX roundtrip. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

You're getting approximately 1.5/mile at that price, which is only so-so. But you get the flexibility of a complete refund up until departure time with a mileage redemption, so keep an eye on redemption rates after you get your mileage tickets: if redemption rates for your itinerary fall, you can put the new itinerary on a complimentary hold, and then immediately cancel the original tickets for a refund. Then, you can purchase the held itinerary at the lower rate.

Your question really belongs in the dedicated AA forum, so I'll alert a Moderator and request that this thread be moved there.

A couple of tips:

1. Search for one, two, or three seats on your desired flights. It's possible that there are some lower-priced seats (for either miles or cash) available; you might be able to snag one, two, or three cheaper seats, and just purchase the remaining seat(s) at the higher price

2. If FLL is an acceptable alternative airport for you -- in either direction -- check mileage and cash rates for that airport. But if you fly AA, you would have to connect somewhere: AA does not offer nonstops between FLL and PHX in either direction.
