IAG signs LOI for 200 Boeing MAX 8-10 @ Paris PAS19

From Chris Sloan, Senior Partner and Managing Editor, Airways Magazine today, on Facebook. Read full story here.

“BREAKING NEWS : IAG signs LOI for 200 #Boeing #737MAX a mix between -8 and -10. First order for MAX since grounding and Max crisis began. A much needed shot in the arm for Boeing.

‪Willie Walsh, CEO IAG: Walsh was a pilot on 737 for 18 years. Here are my raw notes from the presser.

Walsh: I believe this is a great aircraft that we should have in our fleet. I’ve never made a secret of having 737MAX in our fleet. We will use across group with Level, Vueling, & BA at Gatwick. It fits with our network well. We had tough negotiations over last few months. EIS In 2023 but hoping for earlier.‬

‪Walsh: I have been in flight simulator and seen MCAS in operation. It gave me confidence in aircraft. It’s important regulators have time to consider changes. I am confident in Boeing and what they have proposed with 737MAX.‬

‪Walsh: I wouldn’t hesitate boarding #737MAX aircraft. I am not concerned about customer acceptance as it will be 2022-23 before we take delivery ‬

‪Walsh: All of our pilots will undergo simulator training as we have no 737s in fleet currently. I personally don’t believe current 737 pilots would need sim training. ‬

‪Kevin McAllister, CEO Boeing Commercial Airplanes : this is a very special day for us. We are deeply committed to safe return of 737 MAX.‬

Commenting on the Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), the system that caused the two aircraft to crash, Walsh, who is a Boeing 737 rated pilot, offered confidence even into this system.

“I have been in a flight simulator and seen MCAS in operation. It gave me confidence in the aircraft. Its important regulators have time to consider changes. I am confident in Boeing and what they have proposed with the Boeing 737 MAX”.
