Baggage AA/BA

Afternoon All,

Wasn't sure where to post this....

We're flying BA and American Airlines to Punta Cana from LHR via Philadelphia. Our first leg going out is with BA and in Club world so the checked baggage limit is 32 Kg's. The rest of the journey is economy with American airlines and checked baggage is 23 Kg's so i'm guessing we should stick with the 23 KG allowance and the 32 Kg's won't carry over to the other flights?

Andy

Are you on one ticket? The most generous allowance will apply to all flights if you are.

No I don't think so... Different booking references for the BA flight and the AA flights if that means anything? but we booked the flights through an agent and they sent over an e-ticket with it all on the same e-ticket receipt.

It is all the same ticket number or is it separate ticket numbers for the BA flights and the AA flights? FYI, each airline will always have it's own booking references (they use different systems), what matters is the ticket number.

Cheers for coming back so quick...The E-ticket number for each passenger is the same for all the flights...i'm guessing then that the 32Kg allowance will then apply throughout?

So just to be clear, it is all on one ticket number 125-xxxxxxxxxxxxx (BA) or 001-xxxxxxxxxxxxx (AA), correct? You will have different PNRs (the six character reference) because AA uses Sabre.

In that case you are fine. Most generous allowance applies throughout.

While it will not affect OP's ticket, the "most generous" or "most significant" rules do not apply. Rather, the baggage allowance for the operating carrier of the first segment, applies to all segments. OP has an AA-marketed ticket (001-) and thus his allowance in J is 2 bags at 32 kg each. This wlll apply to the outbound trip as well as the return. This information should appear on his e-ticket receipt.

On itineraries to/from the US, it's the "first segment" rule

Strictly speaking only if the first or last ticketed point is a US point does that DOT regulation apply.

But in practice it's the most generous allowance—otherwise, were the carrier to offer a less generous allowance than advertised on one particular segment, the carrier would probably fall afoul of consumer advertising regulations in other jurisdictions.

The ticket number is not indicative of the marketing carrier on the first segment, which is what matters for the DOT regulation. The choice of validating carrier should not affect the baggage calculation, if the flights are the same.

As we've had a good run here, and this is ostensible about inter-OneWorld ticketing and luggage agreements, I'm going to move this over to the OneWorld forum.

FYI - We were told at the airport that we could only have 23 KG's and not the Business class allowance of 32 Kg's

Luckily we packed to the 23kg allowance!

At which airport, LHR or PHL? Going there or coming back? That doesn't sound right if it's outbound.
