3 Continents, but not around the World
Because of the nature of my travel needs, I need to visit North America with a number of stops there, and then South America, with a couple of stops there.
Is it possible to obtain some sort of ticket (clearly not RTW), which goes triangularly from Europe to North, South America, and back to Europe? Or are all options hideously expensive, meaning it would be better to continue on around the planet?
If I do an RTW, I could stop in Brazil and buy an RT from Brazil to Europe, and return to Brazil to continue the RTW later. However, I have heard that tickets are quite expensive ex Brazil. Any suggestions aprecciated.

There is OW Circle Pacific trip but not a Circle Atlantic trip. You should price out the trip you are planning and then look at what a comparable RTW would cost. Perhaps there are some airline packages that will meet your needs. That is what a good T/A can do for you.
I'm not sure why you would want to do the R/T from Brazil rather than just complete the RTW after you finish in SA. BTW, your RTW will be four continents (Europe-NA-SA-Asia-Europe) if you choose to do it.

Thanks for your help, ExMo. Is it better to approach a T/A about this? I have always dealt directly with the airlines themselves, having found T/As (I'm presuming that means travel agents) fairly unhelpful in the past. But maybe they can be good with creative ticketing in a circle Atlantic trip of this nature.

The reason I suggested going with a travel agent is that what you want to do does not fit into any package we seem to know about here. A good T/A might find something as they will have access to many more sources of data.
