OK, I'll bite. Why don't people fly eastbound? The flights take less time, and you get the same number of miles. </font>
For me, it is a question of time. Being NY based and wanting to break the RTW into three trips, it is easier for me to do this going westbound so that I can get back to NY easier and quicker. This way I can do Europe/Middle East as one trip, South America as a trip (with a long stopover and a separate ticket to get home) and a longer trip through Asia/Oceania. Going eastbound, I would have to do Asia/Oceania first, which is less convenient.

Er, in my definitions you (PresRDC) have got Eastbound and Westbound the wrong way round:

NA-&gt;SWP-&gt;Asia-&gt;Eur-&gt;NA is westbound
NA-&gt;Europe-&gt;Asia-&gt;SWP-&gt;NA is Eastbound.

Europe-&gt; Americas-&gt; Asia/SWP Doesn't sound like westbound to you? Sounds that way to me.

I believe he is starting from Europe, so westbound would get him back in the US quickly, but eastbound would put him through Asia/Australia first.

Ah - obviously the "being based in NY" bit confused my simple mind.
