OWE routing ex CAI

Forgive the question but never attempted to include Africa in a OWE itin.

Is it possible to go CAI-LHR-JNB... etc. ? And can BA codeshares with Comair be used?

I'd also like some guidance on how many layovers / transfers I can do within my region of origin (Europe, as OW deems it)

Yep, CAI-LHR-JNB is a great beginning. You have to exit Africa to either SYD or HKG from there, though.

If you start in Cairo, you get 4 segments and two stopovers in Europe, and cannot buy the two additional segments that are on offer in your other continents.

The 4 segments within continent of origin is something of a revelation to me... Sure this stands up? Thanks

You get four segments per continent in any case (except 6 in NA). The difference in the continent of origin is that you can't buy two more, and stopovers (>24 hours) are limited to two. Other than origin, stopovers aren't limited.

Intercontinental segments don't count against either the departure or arrival continent's limit.

Also be reminded that OWE's are limited to a total of 20 segments now, no matter how many continents you buy.

So, theoretically if on the following itin:

CAI-LHR(trf)-NRT-HKG-AKL-MEL-AKL-SCL-LIM-SCL-GRU-LHR-CAI

could I tack on LHR-THR-LHR, stopping over in London a 2nd time between returning from GRU and going on to CAI (as outlined above).

Sorry if this isn't coming out as terribly comprehensible English!!

And do a mileage run turnaround in Tehran? God help you.

And no, you cannot. You can make two flights between England and about 20 countries, of which Iran and Egypt are included.

Nope, the intention is to stay there and see something of the place!!

Having re-read the rules I see that I've already used up my Middle Eastern/Russian legs on the CAI-LHR-CAI.

You can do it with somewhere not on the list, but not as you wrote it. You said "stopping over in London a second time" but then said you would stop in Tehran. The location aside, you can't do that. You are limited to two stopovers in the continent of origin. It doesn't matter where the stopovers are, but you are limited to two total. They can be in the same place, they can be in different places, and you don't have to even use them at all. So if you were going to stop in London on your way back from GRU, and you wanted to use the two segments to make a side trip, you couldn't stop in London on your way back to Cairo.

Aha. Now I get it. Thanks. So the following is permissible?

CAI-LHR(trf)-NRT-HKG-AKL-MEL-AKL-SCL-LIM-SCL-GRU-LHR-RIX-LHR(trf)-CAI

Yes - it looks OK to me. It's 4 continents, and you have 6 more segments for free if you want them! Personally I would take LHR-HKG to get the CX experience if you are in J or F then side trip NRT and somewhere else in Asia (SIN, DPS?) and perhaps some more segments in SWP and Europe?

One too many segments in Europe. You could drop MAD and add EZE to SA, i.e. CAI-LHR-HKG-NRT-HKG-DPS-HKG-AKL-MEL-PER-DRW-SYD-SCL-LIM-SCL-EZE-GRU-LHR-RIX-LHR-CAI

Oh yes - sorry - it was late when I did that and I'd been sampling the Beaujolais Nouveau

It's doable, just remember Darren's caution about only two stopovers in Europe.
