Your experience changing routing on OWE RTW

I'm about to change routing on a 6 continent oneworld explorer ticket I bought before april 15th. I bought the ticket from qantas, but will do the change through AA. Wondered what I am getting myself into, how bad is it, how do I do it?
I'm EXP if it matters, I assume it doesn't. I know the 75$ fee and recomputed taxes, just wondered how much of a mess it is to deal with. Any tips? Also thinking of purchasing a couple extra flights on some continents, if that makes it any worse.

Expect reissue to take several hours (2-3 hours is typical presuming you have around 30 segments). Most AA ticket counters cannot cope with it. LAX can (and does a good job). Ticket will have to be hand written and the tax calculation will exceed the computer limits so it also must be by hand. You can ask AA RTW desk where they recommend having it re-issued, also be sure that they have fully completed the re-routing and tax calculation before you go to the airport for the re-issue. Expect the taxes to be wrong by a few hundred dollars (not in your favour).

I recently had AA RTW desk do a re-issue on an ex-CPT AONE6-- a complete and total re-route (I had only used 1 segment, CPT-LHR) and I even changed it from an east-bounder to a west-bounder. Ticket was originally issued by a TA.

The AA RTW desk did a SPECTACULAR job for me-- the aagent I dealt with was so knowledgeable, so friendly, so professional, so helpful and so thorough that by the time I got to the AA CTO in Manhattan it took them less than 5 minutes to print out the entire ticket and collect my $75 + $5 (that's what took the most time!) I was amazed how quickly the ticket spit out after I gave them the locator-- it was instantaneous practically.

Now I did do one thing that made it so easy-- I limited this particular re-issue to 16 flight coupons, so it will have to be re-issued at least one more time, since I'm entitled to many more.

In any case this AA RTW agent has helped other people here and I would be happy to give you her name via e-mail (I don't know if it's best to name her here? Just being ultra-cautious.) But you will find dealing with her to be a delight.

I am starting a DONE3 on Friday:

BKK-LHR-DXB-LHR-BUD-LHR/LGW-DFW-LGA/JFK-SEA-DFW-LGA/JFK-HKG-DEL-HKG-BKK

I will likely make changes to the segments at the back end of the trip, maybe add MNL or change DEL to BOM. After departure, when I make a change to my itinerary, will I have to reissue and pay the $75 fee before my very next flight or can I do the reissue anytime before the new flights? i.e. keep making changes to my Asia segments and only reissue when I get back to hkg to start the Asia segments.

Reissue before the first flight segment that changed, i.e. book all the changes you want to but only reissue when you need to take one of your changed segments.

I recently purchased a AONE5 at the NRT AA desk. There were changes made by myself after the ticket was purchased. THE AA RTW desk did a great job in the reissue of the ticket. They even FEDEXed the ticket back to me . Great service.....

How did you manage to get an east bound RTW starting with CPT-LHR in the first place. Don't you then end up in North America with no way back to South Africa without transitting Europe a second time? Is this a case where Nigeria comes into play?

You can return from the east via HKG or SYD

But if you are returning from the east then you are west-bound. My question was how you could do it eastbound ie returning from the west. You still have to go North America-Europe-South Africa and if you have already flown CPT-LHR how did you originally have it ticketed???

Actually now that I see what you are saying, you're obviously right. This was all some time (and a couple of AONE purchases) ago-- I have to go back and look how the TA originally routed it (I paid zero attention at the time as it was the second to commence of two ex-JNB AONE6's being bought simultaneously within days of the anticipated price-boost and the itinerary was just a "place-holder" to be re-issued later) and see how it changed during that re-issue.
