With OneWorld RTW fares you have to use a minimum of three carriers. If I fly AA, BA & CX, but use AA code shares on the CX legs, does this count as two or three carriers?

Can you be a bit more explicit about which OW RTW fares you are referring to? There is no such requirement on the OneWorld Explorer or the Global Explorer.

FullScore may be talking about the oneworld awards. You cannot use a codeshare on an award.

FS, that's actually not true. You need to use two other than the program that you are getting the ticket from.

Just making some assumptions from your questions, it looks like you want to use your AAdvantage account to fly British and Cathay but not American. That is fine.

I am actually going to reconsider this advice and say to ask. The language is ambigious and AA has offered to do it in the past. There was one time that I had to use BA and CX exclusively (I never actually took the trip), but it was no problem with ticketing it. Anyway the wording is "Travel must include at least two oneworld partners other than American Airlines or American Eagle." It says you must fly on two partners but it does NOT say you *must* fly on AA. In any event, I would expect that it wouldn't be too difficult to just throw in a short segment somewhere to satisfy the condition. But I would personally just book the ticket and see if they say anything. If they do, worry about it then.

As far as a paid RTW is concerned, you can use any number you want, although I think the only way you could use only one carrier would be on BA since they codeshare to the US from Australia on Qantas.

Darren is correct on the OW rewards tix. B.Watson is not completely correct on the paid RTW, since there are some SW Pacific islands that can only be reached via codeshares. The mileage based gloabal explorer does allow codeshares in this instance.

Well you posted as I was reconsidering, but I agree that I think I am correct. QF is different in this regard.

Anyway, codeshares are also allowed in the OWE but not with non-Oneworld carriers.

Real world experience with OW award tix. I have flown Aer Lingus (BWI-DUB-LHR) and contiuned to CPT on BA. No problems. I have also used AA to Europe, then BA & IB to/from Africa. If you do not need to use AA, then any 2 OW airlines is sufficient. Similiar language in the QF FF program. 2 OW airlines without QF or QF plus 2 additional OW airlines. I believe that is the standard for all OW FF programs that use the OW award program.

I guess I need some further education on this - first off, my comments were related to OW explorer - I know NOTHING about the GE product. It is still my understanding that you can NEVER use a code share on w OWE - ie, you can not fly from Hawaii to Asia since the only way OUT of Hawaii is QF to SYD - you can not use the JL AA code shares. Is the GE product different in regard to this or is my understanding of the OWE wrong?

It is different, but the first thing is that codeshares *are* allowed with the OWE, it just needs to be with another Oneworld carrier. For example, you could not take the AA codeshare to Japan on JAL but you can take the codeshare to Santiago on Lan Chile. It comes in handy occasionally for people who fly in coach and want to claim miles and it has come in handy many times for me regarding availability. Specifically, there was one time that I had to come back SCL-LAX and there was no availability on the LA code but there was on the AA code.

Second, the Global Explorer allows codeshares on Air Fiji, Gulf Air, and Air Pacific. Most or all are on American or Qantas. I can't think of any others off hand. It also allows more limited codesharing with NF/PX/SA/TN/VN/SB and Swissair. But those are a bit more specific. The first have to be with Qantas only and the Swissair is only with British Airways.
