QFF Status Credits for OW RTW

With OWE and GE economy fares, Qantas has told me it grants status credits only as per discount economy rates rather than for Y, which seems to rule out a status-maintenance run on a QF OW ticket, which is apparently booked in M.

Does this seem correct? At that rate, you'd have to go around the world four times on a OW Y fare in order to amass the same number of credits as one trip in J would give you.

Qantas said that it is impossible to buy a genuine Y OWE or GE fare in order to obtain Y-type status credits. Seems a bit odd.

That is correct that flights on QF are in M, which is disc Y.

So a mileage run on QF has to be very carefully planned with lots of sectors just above 1000miles (eg. LHR/HEL).

So a M-OWE is used to assist status maintenance, but not to gain gold status as that would be very difficult on 20 segments.

Also given that full Y costs almost the same as discounted J, why would you not pay the extra 10% to fly business???????

Thanks for that, Mark. What I meant is that you just can't buy a genuine Y OWE or GE fare, at least through Qantas: your choices are discount economy, or genuine business, or genuine first, so far as s/credits go.

However the OWE and GE Biz and First fares represent quite a respectable discount on the costs per leg, yet you reap the same benefit as those who have paid considerably more.

What started the enquiry process is that the QF website's info page re OW RTW fares makes no mention that the economy fares listed are in fact discount economy.

The end result is that the front-end fares are really good value, while DVT-class is only so-so.

All OWE and GE fares are discount fares, regardless of the airline you book with. The fare classes for first, business and coach are A, D and M, respectively. Qantas is not unique in how they book these fares, only in the FF credit that they give -- or don't give -- for M fares.
