Most of what is normally called Latin America (i.e. the bits that speak Spanish or Portuguese) is in South America as far as OWEs are concerned.
I don't see any interpretation that would make SJU part of the continental US.

continent US is the 48 states, in any definition.
OWE cannot cannot define continent US or US, i think GB is refering the definition of mr W
and the statement goes to....... so is the mesopotamia

Well the reason I was asking was because in the Australian OWE rules, it says "BACKTRACKING BETWEEN HAWAII AND THE CONTINENTAL USA/CANADA IS NOT PERMITTED", if SJU is not continental USA, then I could fly SJU-LIH-LAX, and it wouldn't be considered backtracking (i think).

i c....but in your case it is LIH-LAX potion that is backtracking, unelss you can find flights such as lax-lih-sju.
even for such routes, i guess it is not something that we can determine. it is up to the interpetation of the airline staff.
good luck!
[you can argue continental USA + canada, but one can also argue it means continent "usa/canada" = continent "north america" which includes the carribean....]

Sorry. I meant Central America!
And yes, unless youcan a thru flight from Hawaii straight to the caribbean on ONE flight number without any changes , then you might get away with it.

There is a flight SJU-LIH. I though if I took this flight, then technically it wasn't Continental USA-Hawaii, therefore LIH-LAX would be my first flight between Hawaii and Continental USA and therefore wouldn't be considered backtracking.

From my understanding, this can be done, on a transit from EUR or SA. On a westbound OWE, I see something like: ASIA-EUR-SA-sju-lih-lax-restofNA-ASIA... This could not be considered backtracking from Hawaii to cont US, correct? I think we are having conflict re: continental US vs. North America. For a US resident, this could work into a way to throw in a Hawaii trip in the middle of a OWE stopover; say SA-sju-(cheap R/T purchased sju-hometown-sju)-lih-lax-hometown-ASIA.. Anyone been able to book such a route???
