New Strategy

I have been following the one world explorer fares closely and the recent increase in fares from South Africa etc have made business class tickets very expensive.
I noticed that the economy OWE fare from GB is 1149 pounds (About 1700 dollars) It may appeal to flyers with EXP status holding VIPOWs and other upgrades. AA still upgrades its RTW tickets and I wonder whether this strategy will work in adding status miles (How many? I presume 100%)and providing travel at a reasonable cost in comfort if you get upgraded! Is there any way to upgrade BA flights using miles (AA or BA or Qantas)

The way AA upgrades are supposed to work is that you receive Q-mile/point credit for the original booking class of your ticket (M for OWE's, hence 100% Q-miles but only 50% Q-points) not for the actual class of service you sat in.

I don't believe any OW airline allows upgrades using another airline's FF points/miles. So as an AA FF member you may be able to upgrade the AA sectors, but not the other airlines. Not sure on the restrictions on code shares (ie using the AA codeshare of the QF flights over the Pacific). QF points can only be used for upgdeas on QF flight numbers on QF metal. I assume/expect other airlines work the same.

You can't upgrade codeshares.

There's an AA-CX exception where you can upgrade a full-fare Y or J ticket with AA miles.

miles from CX (Asia Miles) can be used to upgrade CX, AA, BA, EI flights, and for non-oneworld carriers, MU, KA and LX...i think for AA, EI, LX, you can even mix the upgrade award with CX flights (e.g. AA and CX flights upgraded on one single award)...

Thanks all for very useful replies. What class economy RTW tickets are? Are they classified as full fare or discounted?
