Maximising on a 3 continent trip

I'm working on a OneWorld itinerary. I want to fly from Europe to North and South America. So a 3 continent trip should be ok.

Can I do a routing with flying two times to North America, e.g.:
MUC - LHR - ... - LHR - LAX - ... - SCL - ... - SCL - LAX - LHR - MUC

Or do i have to fly back without stopping in North America again, e.g:
MUC - LHR - ... - LHR - LAX - ... - SCL - ... - SCL - MAD - FRA

You'll have to buy a 4 continent and return by Asia. You're not allowed to recross oceans.

Excerpt from Fewmile's OWE site:

133N ROUTING/ 1. TRAVEL MUST BE VIA THE ATLANTIC AND
134N . PACIFIC OCEANS. ONLY 1 CROSSING OF EACH
135N . OCEAN IS PERMITTED. TRANSOCEANIC
136N . SURFACE NOT PERMITTED.

Hmmm, that changes my plan and offers new possibilities. The same question for a 4 continent trip:

Can I do a routing with flying two times to North America, e.g.:
MUC - LHR - ... - LHR - LAX - ... - LAX - SCL - ... - SCL - LAX - HKG - ... - HKG - FRA

Or do I have to fly:
MUC - LHR - ... - LHR - SCL - ... - SCL - LAX - ... - LAX - HKG - ... HKG - FRA

You can do the first itinerary but you can only stopover (> 24 hours) on one of the two passes through LAX. The other one must be a connection. Here is the rule from Sabre as shown on FewMiles site.

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">
3. 1 INTERCONTINENTAL DEPARTURE AND 1
INTERCONTINENTAL ARRIVAL PERMITTED
IN EACH CONTINENT EXCEPT AS FOLLOWS.
- 2 PERMITTED IN NORTH AMERICA. 1 MUST
BE A TRANSIT WITHOUT STOPOVER
BETWEEN SOUTH AMERICA AND ANOTHER
CONTINENT

Are you after miles? If so, you might want to change your routing in N. America to maximise miles.

I will do some sight-seeing in South America (Chile, Peru, Bolivia and maybe other countries). So travel to South America on this trip is mainly to have some fun on the ground and maximising miles in South America is secondary. On all other continents I want to maximise miles and try as many different airlines on long-distance flights as possible. If I can stop at interesting places - ok.

I learnt on the OW forum that flights like LHR - DBX - LHR are possible to maximise miles. I'll do the trip in Sep or Oct 2002 and buy a C-class ticket. I know that the time frame of 3.5 weeks is short - for me it's just ok: I do every autumn such a trip (last year on Star and this year on OW).

My current plan:
MUC -(BA)- LHR -(BA)- DBX -(BA)- LHR -(AY)- HEL -(AY)- JFK -(AA)- SJU -(AA)- LAX -(AA)- LAS -(AA/TWA)- STL -(AA)-
MIA -(AA)- SCL - ??? - SCL -(LA)- JFK -(CX)- HKG -(CX)- DEL -(CX)- HKG -(QF)- SIN -(QF)- FRA
(maybe I'll make a stop-over in LHR or HEL and fly back to Germany with an additonal ticket. So I can fly to DBX some weekends before.)

Don't hesitate to make improvements/comments (maximise miles, minimise hotel stays, better service/aircraft on another route, add an Air Lingus (long-haul) flight, etc.). I've still a lot of time to work out the trip.

I'm also not fully sure which FF program to choose. At the moment I consider AA
+ credit card available within Germany
+ first good impression of customer service in Germany
+ Gold/Platinum challenge
- mileage earning in C isn't so good
It will be very hard to reach Emerald this year. A 4 continent trip is not sufficient!? If I'm close to the status, I'll do some mileage runs at the end of the year.

There are a number of opportunities for more miles. I've outlined a few that come to mind and picked up allowed segments you left out in NA and Asia.

JFK-SJU-LAX-LAS-STL-MIA-SCL is 11176 miles. If you are willing to pass up on LAS (many cheap &lt; US$100 return fares are available) then JFK-SJU-STL-LAX-ORD-MIA-LAX-SCL will give you 16065 miles.

In Asia, you have HKG-DEL-HKG-SIN for 6248 miles. You could do HKG-DEL-HKG-DPS-SIN and get 7796 miles.

Although you weren't looking for miles in SA, a couple of routes to consider are SCL-IPC-SCL for 4655 miles, SCL-UIO-SCL for 4683 and SCL-CCS-SCL for 6041.

Wow, that's really a great improvement. Much more miles AND I can fly on an A340 to SCL and back on a B777 via MIA to JFK (in case the stop in MIA is allowed or I've to buy an additional RTW stop/segment) AND longer routes on TWA (last chance for me to fly with them).
(Maybe I'll buy an additional ticket to LAS or stay at another destination. It depends how much time I've left.)

Main purpose is fun/sight-seeing. I still have to work out an itinerary and "my places of interest". Maybe I can't reach all destinations with OW. Most likely I'll catch those smiling 6041 miles on SCL-CCS-SCL.

About 62262miles now:
MUC -(BA)- LHR -(BA)- DXB -(BA)- LHR -(AY)- HEL -(AY)- JFK -(AA)- SJU -(AA/TWA)- STL -(AA/TWA)- LAX -(AA)- ORD -(AA)- MIA -(AA)- LAX -(LA)- SCL - ??? - SCL -(LA)- CCS -(LA)- SCL -(AA)- MIA -(AA)- JFK -(CX)- HKG -(CX)- DEL -(CX)- HKG -(CX) - DPS -(QF)- SIN -(QF)- FRA
