Is it cheaper to go RTW or take a return flight

Now it's the second time that somebody is sitting next to me (MIA-LHR and MIA-FRA0 and telling me it's cheaper to go round the world. One was going to the Philipines the other to (West) Australia. True or false?
Actually both flights where booked and paid by there companies, one of them a Miami based cruise line.

Compared to full FC/BC fares for international trips, it is often cheaper to take an RTW. Just bear in mind that RTW fares often have more limited/restricted seat inventory, require advance purchases, may have change penalties, have min/max stays, and may have a minimum number of stops. If you can live by these conditions, they're certainly a good deal.
