I was wondering, is it possible to add a continent to a OWE ticket after you had started it? Is it possible to pay the difference and re-issue the ticket even though some segments have already been flown?

to the CX rate desk as I was thinking about
adding South America to my RTW trip if time
premits. Call CX and the agents are great
about putting you onto the rate desk if they
can not answer.

I did this in February, converting a CX-issued, HKG-originating 3 continent ticket to a 4-continent ticket (added S. America) by contacting AA's RTW desk-- just paid an add/collect for the difference.

This was done after I flew from HKG to North America.

i remember the fare rule was: you just pay the difference (in fare and taxes) plus the $75 fee.

I believe they calculated mine as a HKG$ denominated exchange rate and converted to US$ at the ROE-- it was an odd amount, and less than $75, so I didn't ask any questions.

Yes you can = but the new fare applies. ie if you issued a OWE ticket last year before the fare increase, if you want to change from a 3 con to 4 con ticket, you will just pay for the fare diff between your OLD 3 con fare and the NEW 4 con fare!

However, please note that once you have returned to your originating Continent, you cannot then 'add' the new continent to your ticket!

So basically, what you're saying is that I can't go back to my originating continent and then head off to my new one and back? My ticket right now is Asia-Europe-NA-SA-NA (transit)-Asia

The simplest would be to do Asia-Europe-S.America-N.America(transit)-Australasia-Asia.

I don't think you could do Asia-Europe-S.America-N.America(transit)-Asia(transit)-Australasia-Asia.
The only time you are allowed 2 intercontinental departures and arrivals to/from Asia is when one of them involves a transit without stopover in Asia during travel between Europe and Australasia.

Have you started your journey yet and if so where are you?
If you are after the mileage, it may be possible to do
Asia-N.America-S.America-N.America(transit)-Europe-Asia(transit)-Australasia-Asia.
(As long as your transit through Asia does not pass through your original point of origin).

I've started my trip already, and am in the States right now. Will be going to South America in August, and then back to Asia through the US. I was hoping to take the CX JFK-YVR-HKG flight, and then maybe go down to Australia with the transit in Hong Kong. Since my flights started in BKK, I was hoping that it would be ok, as long as I don't transit through BKK.

Contrary to what salt has advised tfung, it is definitely not possible to go through asia even as a transit as you are only allowed TWO intercontinental gateways arrival/departures - with the sole exception of North America. So that would pose the problem even if you decide to only transit through asia.

You have to get the ticket reissued first off. There will be a charge of US$75. Bring it to any oneworld carrier. Tell them what you want to do. Some may catch it , others don't - of what you intend to do. You might still get away with it!

I had a 6 cont ticket recently reissued because it was expiring and I had to reroute it. CX reissued it for me, but the way it was reissued, well, let's just say that I suddenly have another year to do the ticket! Of course eagle-eyed ticketing agents will catch the mistake, but usually as long as the check-in agents know their minimal stuff, I can get away with it. (And from experience, only Cathay Pacific check-in agents scrutinize every detail on the ticket. I thankfully do not have any more CX flights on the rest of my OWE ticket)

salt is correct and according to the rules you would need to go to Oz before you touch Asia again. A second intercontinental arrival in Asia would only be permitted if you were heading to Europe from the SouthWest Pacific.

However, I would bet that if you had a ticket issued SouthAmerica - JFK - SYD that CX would happily accept your JFK - SYD coupon on the JFK - HKG - SYD route. We all seem to have differing experience with each of the carriers and I have found that CX is the most loose when it comes to giving First Class passengers what they want especially if it means they will be taking business away from the competition.
