Observers generally expect that SairGroup will sooner or later join either the Oneworld airline alliance led by British Airways and American Airlines or Lufthansa's Star alliance.

Chairman and interim chief executive Eric Honnegger said in a newspaper interview on Saturday that a strategic partner could take a small stake in the airline activities and take a seat on the new supervisory board.

He did not name candidates but SAir's transatlantic partner American Airlines (NYSE:AMR - news) is an obvious choice.

Mr Eddington is also heading to the US to hold talks with new transport secretary Norman Mineta and American Airlines chief executive Don Carty.

The spokeswoman said BA was keen to continue to deepen its ties with American Airlines with a view to establishing an alliance.
