Use AA or BA miles for a BA award?

I am planning an award trip on BA and have a choice of either using miles from my BA or my AA accounts.

Does it make a difference which "bucket" of miles I make the reservation with? Is seat availability (particularly for business or first) better if I use BA Exec Club miles? Does status matter? I am Gold (could be Platinum if necessary) on AA, whereas I am zilch on BA. Thanks.

My understanding is that if you fly to Europe or beyond on BA AND you use AA miles, the transatlantic portion is flown on AA and the onward portion is BA. That is why I like my BA miles more!

As I recall, the mileage required is much less if you use your BA miles. For example, a business class award US to Africa on BA is 100K, whereas it's 150K from AA. As somebody else mentioned, when you use AA miles you travel AA transatlantic, then BA from London onward.

thanks, sounds like it's time to transfer miles from UA and AA to Diners to BA

depends on what you are trading off.
i always keep my AA mile to redeem for CX flights, and avoid AA transatlantic as much as possible. so BA for Europe for me.

note also that from either coast to europe is the same mile, you might want to use it for west coast and purchase ticket for flights from east coast
